‘Canada Will Never be Part of US’: Mark Carney Talks Tough on Trump Threat- wna24

Ottawa: Mark Carney is Canada’s new Prime Minister after winning a big victory in the Liberal Party leadership race. Soon after his win, he made it clear that he would never let the US turn Canada into its 51st state, strongly rejecting US President Donald Trump ’s suggestion over the tariffs issue.  

This comes against the backdrop of Trump’s trade war against Canada and Mexico, where he imposed hefty tariffs on both countries. When Canada’s then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sought diplomatic talks, Trump suggested that Canada should join the US as its 51st state.  

“There’s someone who’s trying to weaken our country: Donald Trump… He’s attacking Canadian families, workers, and businesses, and we cannot let him succeed. And we won’t,” Carney said at the event.

Carney, 59, has never held an elected position before but easily defeated former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, securing 86% of the vote. His win comes after Justin Trudeau stepped down as PM following nine years in power, and his first act was making it clear to Trump that Canada would not give up on its sovereignty.  

Speaking to a cheering crowd in Ottawa, Carney directly responded to Trump’s suggestion that Canada could become part of the US. “America is not Canada. Canada will never ever be part of the US in any way, shape, or form,” he said.  

Carney also accused the US of wanting control over Canada’s natural resources, water, and land. “If they succeed, they will destroy our way of life,” he added. He promised that Canada would keep pushing back against Trump’s trade policies until the US agrees to fair trade.  

Tensions between the two countries have been rising since Trump took office. In December, Trump mocked Trudeau by calling him the “Governor” of the “Great State of Canada.” After becoming US President again in February, Trump even suggested that Canada should join the US to avoid tariffs and receive military protection. Canadian officials took his comments seriously.  

Meanwhile, Justin Trudeau gave his farewell speech, looking back on his time as PM. He told supporters to stay involved in shaping Canada’s future. “I’m damn proud of what we’ve done in the last 10 years,” he said, urging people to focus on what comes next.
