Washington: Elon Musk took a fresh jab at former X CEO Parag Agrawal on Saturday, calling him ineffective while drawing parallels between Agrawal’s past and his own recent scrutiny of US federal workers. This comes as Musk, now heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Donald Trump , has issued an ultimatum to federal employees to justify their work over the past week or risk losing their jobs.
Musk Revives Past Feud
The latest remarks came in response to an X post that highlighted Musk’s past confrontation with Agrawal. The post reads, “Almost three years ago, Elon Musk asked Parag Agrawal what he got done last week. Now he’s asking every federal worker the same question.” Musk replied bluntly to the post, saying “Parag got nothing done. Parag was fired.”
The post has screenshot of an old 2022 conversation between Musk and Agrawal, which took place before Musk’s takeover of Twitter (now X). At the time, Agrawal had attempted to defend Twitter’s internal management, urging Musk not to post comments like “Is Twitter dying?” that could demoralize employees. Musk had responded on that post saying, “What did you get done this week?”
That public clash was seen as a breaking point in their relationship, ultimately leading to Agrawal’s dismissal when Musk took control of the platform.

DOGE’s Notice to Federal Workers
On Saturday, the Trump administration sent out emails to federal employees, instructing them to list their work accomplishments from the past week by Monday night or face potential job loss.
Musk reinforced this directive on X, posting, “All federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week. Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.” The move aligns with Trump’s push to downsize and reshape the federal workforce, which currently has 2.3 million employees.
Emails Sent Across Federal Agencies
By Saturday evening, the email titled “What did you do last week?” was sent to employees in agencies such as:
– Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)
– National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
– Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
– Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)
According to news agency Associated Press, the email asked employees to submit five bullet points summarizing their weekly work and sent it to their managers. Sent from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), it set a deadline of 11:59 PM EST on Monday.
However, legal experts and federal unions have questioned Musk’s authority to terminate employees based on their response—or lack thereof—to the request.
Federal Unions Push Back
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), the largest federal employee union, has vowed to challenge any unlawful terminations. Its president, Everett Kelley, warned against politically motivated purges and mentioned that federal workers have legal protections, as per Associated Press.
