Ottawa: Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed his supporters on Monday, reflecting on his time in office and calling on them to remain involved in shaping the country’s future. Speaking at a gathering of Liberal Party members, Trudeau expressed pride in his government’s work over the past decade but urged people to focus on what comes next.
Trudeau’s farewell speech
Trudeau, who announced in January that he would step down after more than nine years in office, spoke to a cheering crowd. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m damn proud of what we’ve done over these past 10 years,” he said. “But tonight is about our future as a party, as a country.”
His decision to resign came after his approval ratings dropped sharply, leading the ruling Liberal Party to prepare for a leadership change. Despite this, Trudeau remained optimistic about Canada’s political landscape, saying, “Your country needs you maybe more than ever.”
Talks about Canada’s values
During his speech, Trudeau highlighted the need to keep Canada strong. He spoke about how Canadians were standing up for their values in difficult times. Switching to French, he praised the country’s diversity and its role on the global stage.
Returning to English, he indirectly referred to former US President Donald Trump’s policies, saying, “We are a country who will fight when we must, elbows up.” This remark was met with loud applause from his supporters.
Trudeau urged his party members and Canadians to continue their political participation. He described the current moment as crucial for the country’s future, calling it a “nation-defining moment.” He stressed that democracy and freedom require constant effort. “It takes courage, it takes sacrifice, it takes hope and hard work,” he said.
As he neared the end of his speech, Trudeau reminded people not to dwell on past successes but to aim for greater achievements. “Let us not dwell on all the great things we’ve achieved over the last 10 years,” he said. “Let us inspire instead to achieve even more over the next 10 years and decades to come.”

In his closing remarks, Trudeau called for unity among Canadians. “Let us remain steadfast, defiant and united. Let us not just think about our party, let us prove our love of country.”
As he left the stage, the crowd erupted in applause and chanted his name, marking the end of an era for Canada’s Liberal Party.
