London: King Charles and Queen Camilla participated in a pre-Ramadan event during a visit to Darjeeling Express, an Indian restaurant in London, on Wednesday. The royal couple was seen helping pack food donation boxes ahead of Ramadan.

The official Instagram account of The Royal Family posted a video of the royal couple interacting with the staff and assisting them in preparations for the holy Islamic month. “Celebrating British Muslim women at @DarjeelingLdn! Ranging from professional athletes to artists and leaders in the corporate world, The King and Queen spent time with a group of extraordinary women as they prepare for Ramadan,” the caption of the post read.

The post also showed Their Majesties interacting with the women of the all-female kitchen team as they packed biryani into boxes.

“Their Majesties joined the restaurant’s all-female kitchen team to pack biryani into boxes. These will be given to families supported by Doorstep, as part of Darjeeling Express’ commitment to cook for charitable causes every Ramadan,” it added.

The caption also emphasized the importance of Ramadan for Muslims as an opportunity to celebrate diversity.

“Ramadan is a particularly important time for Muslims, where daily life continues as normal, but spiritual focus intensifies. Observing Ramadan can mean many things; this gathering will be an opportunity to celebrate the diversity and creativity of Muslim women, as well as the beauty of the holy month of Ramadan,” it read.

Asma Khan, the owner of the restaurant, also shared the moments on Instagram, noting that the royal couple took some biryani home.

“Today the King and Queen joined us at @DarjeelingLdn for a pre-Ramadan gathering where they packed dates and biryani—and yes, they took some biryani home! ‘Deliver-who? King Charles packs up a takeaway chicken biryani on a visit to see Asma Khan at @DarjeelingLdn in Carnaby Street, London,’” she wrote.

Khan also expressed surprise at the King’s speed, stating that she “didn’t realize the King would be so fast” in packing the donation boxes, to which King Charles jokingly responded that he could have a job there every year.

“In a visit ahead of Ramadan, the King saw how the deli was cooking for charitable causes. When he proved to be quick at packing up dates, Charles was told he could have a job there every year, to which he replied: ‘I may be past my sell-by date,’” she added.

The King and Queen also met chef Imad Alarnab, a Syrian chef who runs Imad’s Syrian Kitchen, along with MasterChef winner and doctor Saliha Mahmood-Ahmed.

Professional rugby player Zainab Alema and author Hajera Memon, along with artists and businesswomen, were also seen engaging in conversation with the King.

Ramadan is set to begin on Friday, February 28, and will continue until March 29.
