New Delhi: An American private firm named Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost on Thursday released breathtaking visuals of the giant craters in Moon’s lunar surface from 60 miles (100 KM) above its surface.

The visuals taken as the spacecraft orbits the celestial body offer an in-depth perspective of the Moon’s surface.

Blue Ghost is set to land at Mare Crisium on the near side of the Moon on March 2, no earlier than 3:34 a.m. ET. The spacecraft, launched on January 15 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, began its lunar orbit on February 13.

NASA Artemis in a X post wrote, “The Moon is so close, we can taste it!”

“New footage from @Firefly_Space shows their lunar lander’s view from 60 miles (100 km) above the Moon. Blue Ghost will land at Mare Crisium, on the near side of the Moon, on March 2, no earlier than 3:34am ET (0834 UTC).” it added.

This mission is a part of the space agency’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, which is backing three upcoming lunar missions scheduled for 2025, 2026, and 2028.

The mission will last approximately 14 Earth days, gathering data on the Moon’s regolith and the interaction between solar wind and Earth’s magnetic field. This information will be vital for future human missions to the Moon under NASA’s Artemis program.

The visuals of Blue Ghost follows shortly after SpaceX launched Intuitive Machines’ Athena lander to the Moon, marking the third lunar lander mission by Elon Musk’s company in 2025.

Intuitive Machines’ Athena lander hitched a ride with SpaceX from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. It’s on a fast track to the Moon, aiming for a March 6 landing while hoping to avoid the fate of its predecessor, which tipped over upon touchdown.

For the first time, so many spacecraft angled for the moon’s surface all at once. Last month, US and Japanese companies shared a rocket and separately launched landers toward Earth’s sidekick. Texas-based Firefly Aerospace should get there first this weekend after a big head start.
