‘Not Interested’: Russia Rejects Trump’s Ukraine Ceasefire Offer; Says Goal is Long Term Peace- wna24
A top aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday dismissed a proposed ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, saying it would only serve to give Ukrainian forces time to regroup rather than bring lasting peace.
Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s foreign policy adviser, made the comments after a phone conversation with US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, as per a report from AFP.
Ushakov made it clear that Russia is looking for a more permanent resolution to the three-year war.
“We are aiming for a long-term peaceful solution that would secure Russia’s legitimate interests,” he said.
He added that any steps that merely “imitate peaceful action” are unnecessary given the current situation.
According to Ushakov, President Putin is expected to provide a “more specific and substantive assessment” of the ceasefire proposal on Thursday.
Meanwhile, US negotiators arrived in Russia on Thursday to formally present their plan for a 30-day ceasefire, which Washington has called for as an “unconditional” step toward ending the war. A key member of the negotiating team in Donald Trump ‘s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. He is slated for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as per a report from Axios.
Yesterday, during a conversation with Irish PM, Trump had threatened Russia with financial consequences. “I can do things financially that would be very bad for Russia. I don’t want to do that because I want to get peace,” the American President had said.
The proposal has yet to receive a formal response from Moscow, but Ushakov’s remarks suggest that Russia remains skeptical of any temporary truce that does not address its broader demands.
G7 Foreign Ministers are slated to meet today, in Canada, to discuss Ukraine and the path to peace. Russian President, Vladimir Putin, who will meet Belarus’ leader Alexander Lukashenko, today, might comment on the ceasefire proposal. We are also expecting a reaction from US President Donald Trump, who will be meeting NATO Chief Mark Rutte.
