New Delhi: A day after a deadly train hijack in Pakistan , Republic has exclusively accessed a five-minute video from Balochistan, recorded just hours after Baloch rebels launched a major operation. The footage serves as undeniable evidence of Pakistan’s diminishing control over the region, showing armed Baloch freedom fighters raiding an elite Pakistani force. 

In the video, the Baloch rebels can be seen checking the identity cards of captured personnel, sparing those of Baloch ethnicity while targeting individuals linked to mass killings. 

The clip also shows the deepening resentment among the people of Balochistan, with civilians seen applauding the Baloch fighters. The rebels’ operation, which appears well-planned and precise, further reinforces the narrative that Pakistan’s military dominance in Balochistan is rapidly crumbling.

Amid escalating tensions in Balochistan, reports indicate a sharp rise in the supply of coffins in Quetta, raising questions about the true scale of the conflict. While Pakistani authorities claim that military operations have ended, ground reports suggest otherwise.

Reports claimed that at least 30 Pakistani soldiers have been killed, and a staggering 214 have been taken hostage by Baloch rebels in Bolan.

The mounting casualties hint at a severe blow to Pakistan’s military control in the region, further fueling speculation that Islamabad is struggling to contain the intensifying insurgency.

By late Wednesday, Pakistani security forces had successfully rescued 190 of the 450 passengers aboard the hijacked train, according to three senior security officials. The operation, conducted in the rugged terrain of Balochistan, was supported by helicopters, with spokesperson Shahid Rind labeling the attack as “an act of terrorism.”

This marks the first instance of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) hijacking a train, though the separatist group has previously targeted railway infrastructure. Reports estimate that the group has a fighting force of approximately 3,000 militants, underscoring the growing insurgency in the region.

The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that the hostages, along with captured security personnel, are being guarded by suicide bombers. The group has warned that the lives of the hostages would be at risk if the government refuses to negotiate.

Trains in Balochistan often carry security personnel, as military officials frequently use rail transport to travel between Quetta and other regions. In November, the BLA orchestrated a suicide bombing at a Quetta train station, resulting in the deaths of 26 people.

Experts believe the train hijacking and its focus on civilians could backfire on the BLA.

“Having failed to inflict significant damage on the Pakistan Army within Balochistan, the BLA has now shifted its focus from military targets to unarmed civilians. While this move may garner immediate public and media attention, it risks weakening their support base among the civilian population, which is essential for their long-term objectives,” said Syed Muhammad Ali, an independent security analyst based in Islamabad.

Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest and least populated province, is rich in oil and minerals. The region is home to the ethnic Baloch minority, who have long accused the central government of systemic discrimination and exploitation.
