Rome: Pope Francis, as per the latest health update by The Vatican, is still critical and remains on oxygen support, but has shown slight improvement and there have been no episodes of asthmatic respiratory attacks. The 88-year-old pontiff was hospitalised in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since February 14 after he complained about breathing difficulties and since then, his health has worsened.
The Vatican released a statement on Monday stating that Pope Francis’s clinical condition is still critical but has shown a slight improvement. The statement further said that today (Monday), there were no instances of asthmatic respiratory distress, and some laboratory results have also improved. The statement added that even though the flow has been slightly reduced, the 88-year-old pontiff remains on oxygen support.
Doctors have indicated that Pope Francis’s main health issue is ‘sepsis,’ a serious blood infection that can occur as a complication of pneumonia. Despite this concern, recent medical updates from the Vatican, including those shared on Sunday, have not indicated any signs of sepsis at this time.
On Saturday, the Pope had a low platelet count, which remained stable but still below normal levels by Sunday. Platelets are essential components of blood that are crucial for clotting and healing wounds. A decreased platelet count can result from various causes, including side effects from medications or infections. Additionally, Pope Francis developed anemia and received blood transfusions on Saturday.
He was also given hematin, a medication designed to increase his hemoglobin levels, which enhances the blood’s ability to transport oxygen. On Sunday, doctors reported that the treatment was yielding positive results.
The Vatican announced on Monday that it would initiate nighttime prayers for the well-being of Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square, encouraging both locals and visitors to participate as the 88-year-old pontiff deals with a challenging lung infection that has led to additional health issues.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s second-in-command, will spearhead the inaugural prayer event on Monday evening. This announcement recalled the candlelight vigils held in the piazza prior to the passing of St. John Paul II in 2005. A statement noted, “The night went well; the pope slept and is currently resting.” A medical update is anticipated later today.
