Rajan and his family members were going to Dalhousie in a car to enjoy weekly holidays. While on the way, rain started. During the journey, when the rain was falling, Rajan felt that when another vehicle or bus passing through them gives a horn, the intensity of the sound so produced was found to be more than that it was in the area where there was no rain.

(a) What according to you be the reason behind increase in the intensity of sound in rain ?
(b) What value you attach to the Rajan’s view ?
Ans. (a) Intensity of sound increases because of two reasons:
(i) The amount of water vapours present in the atmosphere is much higher on a rainy day than on a dry day. Since water vapours are lighter than dry air, so density of wet air becomes less than that of dry air. As speed of sound is inversely proportional to the square root of the density, therefore, velocity of sound is increased due to the presence of moisture.
(ii) Because of greater velocity in moist air, the sound is able to travel the distance in comparatively smaller time. The air resistance acts for a smaller time and thus there is a lesser decrease in its (amplitude) which results in high intensity.
(b) Deep knowledge of the subject and use of fundamentals.
