Moscow: Russia has agreed to help United States administration led by President Donald Trump in dealing with Iran and Tehran’s Nuclear programme. Moscow will also assist its support for regional anti-US proxies, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.
Trump, ever since his return to the White House for the second term, has been trying to restore bilateral ties with Russia. Trump in February had called his counterpart Vladimir Putin when he discussed Ukraine war, Iran among other issues in a lengthy conversation.
Trump expressed his willingness for negotiating a peace deal between Ukraine-Russia and dealing with Iran and its nuclear programme.
Days after Trump and Putin’s call, senior ministers of both the nations met in Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh last month where they discussed Iran and Ukraine war.
The report, which was picked up by Russian state media, quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying, “Russia believes that the United States and Iran should resolve all problems through negotiations” and that Moscow “is ready to do everything in its power to achieve this.”
Trump last month restored his “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran which included efforts to drive its oil exports down to zero in order to stop Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, Reuters reported. However, Iran denied any such intention.
Russia-Iran ties
Russia has deepened its ties with the Islamic Republic since the start of the Ukraine war, and signed a strategic cooperation treaty with Iran in January. It was after Iran’s assistance, Russia started producing its own variants of Shahed drones called Geran-2.
Speaking on Moscow extending its support to Washington to mediate talks, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghai said that it is natural for nations to extend assistance.
“Given the importance of these issues, it is quite possible that many parties will show goodwill and willingness to help in solving various problems,” Baghai said.
Trump halts military aid to Ukraine
In a big decision earlier today, Donald Trump directed his government to halt all the military aid to Ukraine days after a heated public blowout with Ukrainian counterpart Zelenskyy at the Oval Office in White House.
In the most intense public spat ever witnessed between two heads of countries at White House, Trump accused Zelenskyy of gambling with World War 3 and lives of millions of people. The US President blamed Zelenskyy for not wanting a ceasefire and end to war.
Days after White House showdown, Zelensky on Monday irked Trump once again after he made a statement saying that the end of war with Russia is very, very far away. This triggered the US President who again lambasted his Ukrainian counterpart and reiterated, “I had said that Zelenskyy doesn’t want peace” and signalled to cancel all the aid to Kyiv. Hours after his threat, Trump halted military aid to Ukraine.
