Kyiv: Russia and Ukraine launched heavy aerial attacks overnight Saturday, with both sides reporting more than 100 enemy drones over their respective territories, this comes after President Putin met with US envoy Steve Witkoff to discuss proposed 30-day ceasefire in the war.
At a press conference on Thursday, Putin expressed support for a truce in principle but outlined several details that need clarification before agreement. Kyiv has backed the proposal, though Ukrainian officials remain skeptical about Moscow’s commitment.
Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy in a statement made on Saturday, accused Russia of building up forces along the border. He said, “The buildup of Russian forces indicates that Moscow intends to keep ignoring diplomacy. It is clear that Russia is prolonging the war,”
The Ukrainian leader stressed that Kyiv’s forces are holding their ground in Russia’s Kursk region, despite U.S. President Donald Trump ‘s claim on Friday that “thousands” of Ukrainian troops are surrounded by Russian forces.
“The operation of our forces in the designated areas of the Kursk region continues,” Zelenskyy said. “Our troops continue to hold back Russian and North Korean groupings in the Kursk region. There is no encirclement of our troops.”
Ukraine’s air force on Saturday, reported that Russia launched a wave of 178 drones and two ballistic missiles overnight. The barrage included Shahed-type attack drones and decoy drones aimed at confusing air defenses. Ukrainian forces successfully shot down around 130 drones, while 38 more were lost before reaching their targets.
Russia targeted energy facilities, causing significant damage, according to Ukraine’s private energy company, DTEK.
