Russia’s Silence on Ceasefire Shows They Want to Prolong War, Says Zelenskyy- wna24

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of deliberately delaying peace efforts, saying Moscow has yet to provide a “meaningful response” to the U.S. ceasefire proposals. In a statement on X, Zelenskyy urged Washington to exert pressure on the Kremlin to end the war.

“For more than a day already, the world has yet to hear a meaningful response from Russia to the proposals made,” he said. “This once again demonstrates that Russia seeks to prolong the war and postpone peace for as long as possible. We hope that U.S. pressure will be sufficient to compel Russia to end the war.”

Ukraine Backs U.S. Ceasefire Proposal

Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine had engaged in constructive discussions with U.S. officials during a recent meeting in Saudi Arabia. He noted that while Ukraine initially proposed a ceasefire for air and sea operations, the U.S. suggested expanding it to include land forces—an idea Kyiv welcomed.

“The control of such a ceasefire remains an important issue, and we appreciate the United States’ willingness to organize the technical aspects of such control,” he said.

The Ukrainian leader expressed appreciation for military aid and intelligence-sharing agreements that had resumed with Washington. He also reiterated Kyiv’s commitment to peace and continued engagement with European and American partners.

“Our team is prepared to continue working constructively with all partners in America, Europe, and other parts of the world who are committed to bringing peace closer,” Zelenskyy said.

Meanwhile, Russia has yet to formally respond to the ceasefire proposal. While Russian officials have previously dismissed such agreements as temporary measures that benefit Ukraine’s military, there has been no official statement from President Vladimir Putin ’s government. The Russian President is currently conducting a meeting with Belarus’ leader Alexander Lukashenko. After the meeting, during a press conference, the Russia President might comment on the American ceasefire proposal.

Ukraine and its Western allies are now waiting to see if Russia will engage in talks—or continue to delay peace negotiations.
