Making a shocking claim during US President Donald Trump ’s second term government’s first cabinet meeting on Wednesday, billionaire business tycoon Elon Musk revealed that his team at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been receiving ‘a lot of death threats’ and backlash.

The Tesla CEO, who is now heading the Trump 2.0’s DOGE, spoke about his contributions to the administration. He explained that the aggressive cost-cutting efforts of the US Department aims to ‘address the enormous deficit’.

“If we don’t do this, America will go bankrupt…we simply cannot sustain, as a country, $2 trillion deficits,” the SpaceX CEO added while speaking about receiving criticism over the steps taken to downsize the federal government and its spending.

Donald Trump Praises Elon Musk

During his first Cabinet meeting, US President Trump heaped praises on Musk and said, “It’s an honour to have you. He’s been a tremendously successful guy. He’s working so hard. And he’s got businesses to run…he’s sacrificing a lot and getting a lot of praise. I’ll tell you, but he’s also getting hit. We would expect that, and that’s the way it works.” Trump then requested Musk to explain the steps taken by DOGE to reduce US national debt.

‘Humble tech support’

The Tesla CEO, who was donning the usual black – Make America Great Again – baseball cap and a sports jacket on a ‘tech support’ t-shirt, started his address by calling himself a ‘humble tech support’ of the Trump government.

“DOGE is helping to fix the government computer systems. Many of these systems are extremely old. They don’t communicate. There are a lot of mistakes in the systems. The software doesn’t work.  So, we are actually tech support. It’s ironic, but it’s true,” Musk said.

Addressing the White House Cabinet Room, the world’s richest man also explained how his team is working with the US administration towards slashing the $6.7 trillion budget by $1 trillion this year. He spoke about how this controversial cost cut decision has the potential to bring significant changes in the functioning of the government system and programs.

Moreover, last week, all US federal employees reportedly received an email asking to justify their work accomplishments (five bullet points of what they have done in the previous week) or face losing their jobs. Trump during the cabinet meeting stated that those federal workers who have not replied to the email ‘are on the bubble’ and at risk of getting fired.

‘DOGE Will Make Mistakes’

Talking about the contributions of his team in the cabinet meeting, tech giant Elon Musk admitted that DOGE won’t be perfect and it ‘will make mistakes’. He further added, “But when we make a mistake, we’ll fix it very quickly”

Stressing on how steady steps would help save trillions of dollars in federal grant funds, the billionaire said, “We need to move quickly if we’re to achieve a trillion-dollar deficit reduction in financial year 2026. It requires saving $4 billion per day, every day from now through the end of September. But we can do it, and we will do it”.
