New Delhi: A disturbing image of football legend Diego Maradona on his deathbed was presented in court on Tuesday as the trial into the circumstances surrounding his death began. The photo, shown to judges during the first hearing, was used by prosecutor Patricio Ferrari to highlight alleged criminal neglect by Maradona’s medical team.

“This is how he died,” Ferrari said, holding up the haunting photograph.
He argued that the image demonstrated the physical deterioration of Maradona’s body and strengthened the prosecution’s case that he had not received proper medical attention.
The image, which depicts the late footballer lying in bed with a noticeably swollen abdomen, was presented as evidence of extreme negligence in his care.
The courtroom was shaken by the release of the image, with several of Maradona’s family members visibly distressed and in tears. The defendants, including members of Maradona’s medical team, sat in silence, their faces tense.
Ferrari went further, accusing the defendants of turning a blind eye to Maradona’s condition.
“Whoever comes to tell you, the judges, that they didn’t perceive what was happening to Diego, they are lying to your faces,” Ferrari told the court, adding, “Anyone who sees him lying in bed like that for several days, is lying to you if they don’t tell you that they were involved in a homicide.”

Medical Team Goes on Trial for Maradona’s Death
Seven members of Diego Maradona’s medical team are facing homicide charges in Buenos Aires, accused of negligence in the football icon’s death.
Maradona passed away on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60, while recovering from brain surgery to remove a blood clot. His death was linked to his long history of cocaine and alcohol addiction. The seven healthcare professionals facing trial are accused of contributing to his death through negligence, with prosecutors asserting that Maradona’s life could have been saved had he received proper medical care.
The case has drawn widespread attention, with Maradona’s death leaving a massive impact not just in Argentina but around the globe. The football icon, known for leading Argentina to World Cup victory in 1986, had battled addiction and health issues throughout his life. While his struggles were well-documented, prosecutors claim that Maradona’s death could have been prevented if his medical team had acted differently.
As the trial continues, the world will watch closely to see if justice is served for one of football’s greatest legends.
