London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is hosting a European leader’s summit on Sunday to shore up support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after a heated showdown at Oval Office with Donald Trump .

On Sunday, Starmer announced that Britain, France, and Ukraine have agreed to collaborate on a ceasefire plan to present to the United States. This plan, he noted, emerged from discussions among the leaders of the three countries following tensions at the White House.

The meeting in London has since gained increased importance, as it focuses on defending Ukraine, a war-torn ally, and strengthening the continent’s defenses.

Speaking to a British media, Starmer expressed confidence that President Trump is dedicated to achieving lasting peace in Ukraine, but emphasized that American security guarantees would be crucial for ensuring the sustainability of such peace.

The summit was initally planned to celebrate the diplomatic efforts made over the past few weeks, with a hope of advancing peace in Ukraine.

Starmer Hosts European Leaders

Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer greeted Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as she arrived for a meeting at 10 Downing Street in London on Sunday.

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni told British Prime Minister Keir Starmer that the West must remain united in support of Ukraine.

Meloni said she is in London at a “precious moment” for a summit Sunday with the goal of achieving a lasting piece for Ukraine.

“I think it is very, very important that we avoid the risk that the West divides,” Meloni said.

Starmer told Meloni that they have a similar mindset on their approach over the conflict. Both leaders said they spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday, a day after his talks collapsed in extraordinary fashion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Meloni is a strong supporter of Ukraine and has a bond with Trump. She was the only European leader to attend his inauguration.

The summit at Lancaster House, a historic venue near Buckingham Palace, will comprise over a dozen European leaders, as well as representatives from NATO and the European Commission.
