Washington DC: US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy were seen involved in a verbal spat at the White House on Friday, with Trump delivering a sharp rebuke to Zelenskyy over his approach to the ongoing war with Russia. Trump also lashed out at former US President Joe Biden’s handling of the situation, criticising his management of the war as a “misguided effort” and calling him “stupid president”. The tension between the two leaders escalated when Zelenskyy appeared to undermine US Vice President JD Vance’s diplomatic approach, prompting Vance to accuse Zelenskyy of trying to use American media for propaganda purposes. Trump intervened, criticising Zelenskyy for his perceived lack of gratitude for the United States’ unwavering support during the ongoing war with Russia.

The confrontation stemmed from a growing tension between Trump and Zelenskyy over the level of gratitude the Ukrainian president was showing for the United States’ crucial assistance in the war against Russia. The meeting, initially planned to sign a deal on rare-earth elements and hold a joint press conference, quickly descended into chaos.

The US President fiercely criticised his Ukrainian counterpart over his perceived lack of gratitude for the United States’ unwavering support during the ongoing war with Russia. The confrontation escalated when Trump accused Zelenskyy of being disrespectful and schooled for not acknowledging the crucial role of the US in Ukraine’s fight against Russia.

‘What Kind of Diplomacy JD…’: Zelenskyy Confrontational Tone Ignited Verbal Clash

The trouble began when Vice President Vance, during the meeting, sharply criticised former President Joe Biden’s management of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Zelenskyy, who has consistently sought American military and financial support for his country’s war efforts, responded in a confrontational tone, asking, “What kind of diplomacy, JD, are you speaking about?”. Vance quickly hit back, accusing Zelenskyy of disrespecting the US and using the media to address the matter inappropriately.

Zelenskyy then appeared to undermine US Vice President JD Vance’s diplomatic approach, saying, “Have you ever been to Ukraine? Have you seen the problems we have? Come once.” His remarks prompted a sharp response from Vance and a subsequent intervention by President Trump.

Trump, who appeared to be growing increasingly frustrated with the conversation, turned his attention to Zelenskyy, making it clear that he was unimpressed with his behaviour. In a scathing comment, while lashing out at Biden, Trump stated, “We gave you, through this stupid president (Joe Biden), $350 billion. We gave you military equipment… If you didn’t have our military equipment, this war would have been over in two weeks.”

The US President’s words were blunt as he continued, “You have to be thankful… You don’t have the cards,” reinforcing his belief that Ukraine owes a big amount of its continued resistance to American support. Trump’s tone grew sharper as he warned Zelenskyy for his words addressed to VP Vance, “Don’t tell us what we’re going to feel. You are in no position to dictate what we’re going to feel.”

The meeting took a decisive turn for the worse when President Trump, feeling the exchange was no longer productive, declared that Zelenskyy’s visit had come to an end. “It’s amazing what comes out through emotion, and I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for peace if America is involved,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account, reflecting on the breakdown in relations.

Trump-Zelenskyy Meeting Ended In Disarray

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy left the White House shortly after, with the White House stating that the Ukrainian leader had been asked to leave.

The planned signing of a deal, which would have given the US a stake in Ukraine’s rare-earth elements, was cancelled, as was the joint press conference between the two leaders. The day, once expected to be a diplomatic triumph for Ukraine, ended in disarray.

During the meeting, the tension between the two leaders continued to rise as Trump berated Zelenskyy for what he saw as a lack of appreciation for the American people. “People are dying, you’re running low on soldiers,” Trump said, pointing out the grim reality of Ukraine’s shredding resources and manpower.

The US President went on to make it clear that Ukraine’s fate could change drastically without continued American support. “You’re either going to make a deal, or we’re out, and if we’re out, you’ll fight it out. I don’t think it’s going to be pretty,” Trump warned Zelenskyy.

Zelenskyy, however, did not hold back in his response. He challenged Trump’s approach to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to “make no compromises with a killer,” referring to the Russian leader’s actions in Ukraine and the ongoing conflict. Trump, in turn, dismissed the idea that compromising with Putin was not an option. “You are gambling with World War III,” Trump warned, echoing his concerns about the high stakes of the conflict.

As the exchange drew to a close, Trump reiterated his disapproval of Zelenskyy’s attitude, saying, “You didn’t say thank you.” Zelenskyy, in an attempt to defend himself, raised his voice and responded, “I said a lot of times thank you to American people,” though this did little to de-escalate the tension in the room.

In the wake of the meeting, Trump made it clear that Zelenskyy was welcome to return to the United States at any time, but only when he was “ready for peace.”

Zelenskyy, for his part, took to social media later to thank the American people for their ongoing support. However, he refrained from commenting directly on the heated exchange that had taken place in the Oval Office.
