Washington: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday read aloud a letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his speech to Congress, suggesting that negotiations for a Russia-Ukraine peace deal may be back on track. His remarks come just days after a tense Oval Office meeting with Zelenskyy ended without progress.  

Trump described the letter as “important,” saying it indicated that Ukraine was ready to return to the negotiating table. “We’ve had serious discussions with Russia and have received strong signals that they are ready for peace,” he told lawmakers. “Wouldn’t that be beautiful?”  

His comments marked a shift from last week’s meeting, where he had warned Zelenskyy that a peace deal was “far, far, far away” unless Ukraine was willing to compromise.  

The letter follows a contentious discussion in the White House, where Trump reportedly pushed Zelenskyy to consider negotiations with Russia. Zelenskyy, however, has repeatedly insisted that any peace deal must not come at the cost of Ukraine’s sovereignty. The breakdown of talks last week had fueled speculation that US support for Kyiv could weaken under Trump’s leadership.  Political Reactions and Fallout

Trump’s statement received mixed reactions in Congress. While Republicans welcomed the idea of renewed peace efforts, Democrats were skeptical, with some accusing the President of undermining Ukraine’s position.  

During the address, Democratic Rep. Al Green interrupted Trump, shouting, “You have no mandate to cut Medicaid!” before being removed from the chamber.
