Washington: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet President Donald Trump in Washington on Friday, where Kyiv aims to secure US support for Ukraine’s security against potential Russian aggression.

During Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington, Ukrainian delegation is expected to sign a landmark economic agreement with the US aimed at financing the reconstruction of war-damaged Ukraine, a deal that would closely tie the two countries together for years to come.

Though the deal, which is seen as a step toward ending the war on Ukraine, references the importance of Kyiv’s security, it leaves that to a separate agreement to be discussed between the two leaders — talks that are likely to commence Friday.

The meeting is expected to center largely on a potential US-Ukraine deal concerning Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals, which are essential for producing various tech products. The two countries seem close to finalizing the agreement, which could have significant implications for both nations.

However, President Zelenskyy has made it clear that the deal would not move forward unless it properly addresses Ukraine’s future security against Russia. He noted that the agreement should not solely serve American interests but also ensure long-term protection for Ukraine in the face of potential Russian aggression.

As Ukrainian forces resist Russia’s advances, Kyiv leaders push for a US-brokered peace plan with security guarantees. Many Ukrainians fear a rushed peace deal could enable Moscow to rearm and prepare for a future aggression.

According to AP, The US and Ukraine have reached a preliminary economic agreement to create a co-owned investment fund. Ukraine will contribute 50% of future revenues from natural resources, including minerals and hydrocarbons. 

A detailed agreement will follow once the preliminary one is signed.

Trump on Thursday softened his stance on Volodymyr Zelenskyy, expressing respect for him ahead of their scheduled meeting. 

Earlier, US President Trump called Ukrainian President, Zelenskyy a “dictator” in a post on his Truth Social platform.

At a joint press conference with British Prime Minister, Trump said, “I think we’re going to have a very good meeting tomorrow morning. We’re going to get along really well. I have a lot of respect for him.”
