Trump Hints at Reconsidering US-Canada Border Demarcation Treaty: Reports
According to a New York Times report citing four people on the condition of anonymity, who have firsthand information of their content, in a conversation with outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump is planning on rethinking and reconsidering the US-Canada Border Demarcation Treaty.
As per the report, Trump, in an early February call with Trudeau, expressed his dissatisfaction with the US-Canada Border Demarcation Treaty, and challenged it. According to the New York Times article, the Canadian officials have said that Trump not only wants to make Canada a part of the US, but he also wants to eject the country out of an intelligence-sharing group called ‘Five Eyes’, which includes Australia, New Zealand and Britain. Trump also aims to review the military cooperation between the US-Canada, especially the North American Aerospace Defence Command.

The US-Canada Border Demarcation Treaty, Trump referred to, was established in 1908, which defined the international boundary between Canada, then a British dominion, and the United States, according to the New York Times report. Along with reconsidering this treaty, Trump discussed the potential of revisiting the management of shared lakes and rivers between the two countries, an issue governed by various treaties, which he has previously expressed interest in.
This comes amid his remarks from January this year, where he stated he planned to use “economic force” against Canada. The frequent social media references to Canada as the “51st state” and Prime Minister Trudeau as its “Governor” were also constant claims made by the US President.

Trump has spoken about making Canada the 51st state of the United States, several times. Once such time, he had expressed his seriousness about annexing Canada, called it a ‘real thing’ and had said, “I think Canada would be much better off being the 51st state because we lose $200 billion a year with Canada. And I’m not going to let that happen,” he said. “Why are we paying $200 billion a year, essentially a subsidy to Canada?”
US and Canada have been at loggerheads for a very long time, as relations turned sour between US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In one of his first executive orders as the President, Trump ordered 25 percent import tariffs on Canada, which have now been implemented. The tariff war between the two countries escalated after Canada announced retaliatory duties on the US. Trump has also expressed his wish to include Canada as part of the United States, which has not gone well with Trudeau.
