US Media on Zelenskyy’s ‘Side’ After his Failed Meeting with Trump-Vance?
The long-awaited meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump, which did begin on a calm note, turned into an argument of sorts in the end, leading the Ukrainian President to storm out of the White House. The foreign leaders and the media from across the world have had different reactions to this political fiasco.
The US media is also divided in terms of their reactions – while some believe that this derailed meeting was a huge setback for the US President Donald Trump, the others thought that it was a big win for Trump’s ‘America First’ plan.
‘Turning Ukraine Over to Putin A Political Calamity for Trump’
The thoughts of the Conservative-leaning Wall Street Journal do not align with the US President, and the editorial board has warned the country that “turning Ukraine over to Mr. Putin would be catastrophic for that country and Europe, but it would be a political calamity for Mr. Trump too.” The media outlet further said that “Friday’s spectacle won’t make Putin any more willing to stop his onslaught”.

The outlet believes that it’s “bewildering to see Mr. Trump’s allies defending this debacle as some show of American strength” and that the country’s expectation to limit Russia’s expansionism without making use of the US forces is now “harder to achieve”.
The New York Times has also remarked critically on Trump’s approach and his resolve to do away with the traditional sources of power of the United States. The paper assessed the meltdown as “Trump’s determination to scrap America’s traditional sources of power – its alliances among like-minded democracies – and return the country to an era of raw great-power negotiations”. The paper also said that following this meeting between the US and Ukraine has shattered the three-year wartime partnership between Washington and Kyiv.

The Vice President of the United States, JD Vance’s statement triggered the meltdown. He said, “Mr. President, with respect. I think it’s disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media.”
Before Zelenskyy could respond, he was stopped by the US President who raised his voice at his Ukrainian counterpart and said, “You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people. You’re gambling with World War III, and what you’re doing is very disrespectful to the country, this country that’s backed you far more than a lot of people say they should have…”
Zelenskyy then got up in the middle of the conversation and stormed out of the White House. Since the meeting ended abruptly, the minerals deal that was to be signed between Ukraine and the US after the meeting, couldn’t be signed. The deal involved granting the United States a 50 percent stake in Ukraine’s rare earth elements. According to reports, Ukraine would need to allocate half of its future earnings from state-owned mineral resources, as well as from oil and gas.
