Very Short Answer Type Questions

Q.1. What is a wave ?
Ans. A wave is a disturbance in a medium due to repeated periodic motion of particles about their mean position, such that the disturbance is handed over from one particle to the other without the actual motion of the medium.
Q.2. Name the two types of mechanical waves.
Ans. (i) Transverse waves and (ii) Longitudinal waves.
Q.3. What is a transverse wave?
Ans. It is a wave in which the particles of the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave.
Q.4. What is a longitudinal wave ?
Ans. It is a wave in which the particles of the medium vibrate in the direction of propagation of the wave.
Q.5. What is a crest?
Ans. Crests are the elevations in a wave i.e., the position of the maximum displacement in the positive (above the mean position) direction.
Q.6. What is a trough ?
Ans. Troughs are the depressions in a wave i.e., maximum displacement in the negative (below the mean position) direction.
Q.7. What do you understand by the term sound energy?
Ans. Sound is a mechanical energy which produces a sensation of hearing.
Q.8. What do you understand by the term infrasonic vibrations ?
Ans. The sounds of frequency lower than 20 Hz are called the infrasonics or subsonics.
Q.9. What is audible range ?
Ans. The range of frequencies from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz is called audible range or the limit of audibility.
