What is a disease? Explain the various types of diseases giving one example of each.

Ans. Disease is a state of being uncomfortable with ones over body or mind. It can be explained as malfunctioning of any tissue, organ or organ system that causes discomfort.

Diseases are of various types :

(i) Classification based on type of causative organism: Types of diseases vary with causative organism. It can be a Bacteria, Protozoan, Viral, Fungal or Helminthic disease.

(ii) Classification based on portal of Entry: Portal of entry can be defined as pathway by which infectious agents enter the body. It can be gastrointestinal tract. Respiratory tract, Urinogenital tract, skin.

(iii) Classification based on duration of disease: Some diseases last for longer time than others. Diseases that prevail for short durations are called acute diseases while diseases that make us suffer for longer durations are called chronic diseases.

(iv) Classification based on whether the disease is by birth or not: On the basis of this factor diseases can be classified into acquired and congenital diseases. Acquired diseases are further explained as infectious and non-infectious diseases.
