Washington DC: Italian Prime Minister Gerogia Meloni on Saturday slammed the ‘Left’ for their “double standards,” accusing them of labelling leaders like US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “threat to democracy.”
Speaking via videolink at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, the Italian Prime Minister praised Trump and JD Vance while criticising “elites” and left-wing politicians. She pointed out that the Left had become increasingly frustrated, and with Trump’s rise, their frustration had turned into “hysteria.”

She said, “The Left is nervous and with Trump’s victory, their irritation has turned into hysteria, not only because conservatives are winning, but because conservatives are now collaborating globally. When Bill Clinton and Tony Blair created the global leftist liberal network in the 90s, they were called statesmen.”
Speaking further during her address, Meloni criticized the Left for labelling leaders like Donald Trump, and PM Modi as threats to democracy. She called it a “double standard” and emphasized that despite the constant criticism and attempts to discredit them, people no longer believe these accusations. She expressed her confidence that citizens continue to support the global conservative movement, defying the narrative pushed by their opponents.
“Today, when Trump, Maloni, Millay or maybe Modi talk, they are called a threat to democracy. This is the last double standard, but we are used to it, and the good news is people no longer believe in their lies, despite all the mud they throw at us. Citizens keep voting for us,” she added.
‘Being Conservative Is Cool’: BJP
As mentioned above, when Meloni called out liberals over double standards, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reshared the Italian leader’s video highlighting the moment and she said, “Being conservative is cool.”
BJP IT Chief Amit Malviya in a tweet on X said, “The Left is nervous and with Trump’s victory, their irritation has turned into hysteria, not only because Conservatives are winning, but because Conservatives are now collaborating globally. When Bill Clinton and Tony Blair created the global Leftist liberal network in the 90s, they were called statesmen. Today, when Trump, Maloni, Millay or maybe Modi talk, they are called a threat to democracy. This is the last double standard, but we are used to it, and the good news is people no longer believe in their lies, despite all the mud they throw at us. Citizens keep voting for us.- Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni speaking at the CPAC 2025 Conference in Washington DC.”
“The rise of the global Conservative movement is stronger than ever. Being Conservative is cool,” Malviya added.

Meloni’s participation at CPAC came amid significant backlash from Italian opposition leaders who called for her to cancel her appearance, especially following former Trump advisor Steve Bannon’s controversial speech. Bannon appeared to make a Nazi-style salute during his address, prompting Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein to accuse CPAC of being a “neo-fascist gathering.”
However, Meloni dismissed these criticisms, aligning herself with the conservative movement and reiterating her belief in serving the people rather than ruling over them. “We serve the people, we do not rule over them,” she said.
