Born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories on March 16, 1965, 59-year-old Mark Carney was raised in Edmonton, Alberta. Carney lives in Canada with his British-born wife Diana and four daughters. Mark Carney holds Canadian, UK, and Irish citizenships. He has chosen to eventually pursue Canadian citizenship exclusively, a decision that is not legally mandated but is considered politically prudent.

In his first reaction after becoming the Prime Minister-designate of Canada, Mark Carney thanked everyone and reiterated that they are ‘strongest when united’.

The banker-turned-politician also thanked his competitors and congratulated them for their positive campaigns; he went on to say that together, they showed the people of Canada that they are ready to win.

Mark Carney also congratulated the outgoing Canada PM Justin Trudeau for his hard work and service to the country. In his post on ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter), Carney said, “Thank you, Prime Minister Trudeau. For your hard work, for your leadership, and for your great service to our country.”

The former central bank governor has triumphed in the race for leadership of Canada’s Liberal Party, winning an impressive 86% of the vote. Liberal Party President Sachit Mehra confirmed Carney’s win, signaling a significant change in Canadian politics. With his vast background in economic management and global finance, Carney is expected to offer a new outlook on the country’s leadership.

Speaking about Mark Carney’s educational qualifications, he did his bachelor’s in Economics from Harvard University in 1988 and then his master’s and doctoral degrees from Oxford University, in Economics. During his time at Harvard, Mark Carney served as a backup goalie in ice hockey, for Harvard.

Mark Carney has had a long journey, from banking to politics; an ex-Goldman Sachs executive, Carney worked in London, New York, Tokyo and Toronto for 13 years before becoming the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada in 2003. He headed the Bank of Canada for five years, from 2008 to 2013 and then the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. He is credited to have steered Canada successfully during the 2008 financial crisis and was the first non-British head of the Bank of England since its foundation in 1694.

Mark Carney does not have much experience in politics and began serving as the United Nations’ Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance in 2020. Mark Carney announced his candidacy in January and has since garnered support from Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament.

Mark Carney’s election as the Canadian PM comes amid a crucial time as Canada continues to fight US President Donald Trump ‘s latest policy changes and threats. The tariffs imposed by the United States on Canada and the latter’s retaliation have given way to a trade war between the two countries. Trump has also been threatening to annex Canada and make it a part of the US, as the 51st state. Recently, as per reports, Trump has also expressed his dissatisfaction with the long-standing US-Canada Border Demarcation Treaty and the water agreements between the countries; he wishes to make changes and also end the water agreements signed to share and manage important lakes including Ontario.
