Canada’s Stern Warning to US Amid Ongoing Tariff War
Ahead of the imposition of tariffs on Canada by the US President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued a warning to the United States, stating that Canada will have an ‘immediate and very strong reaction’ to the tariffs. The announcement comes amidst escalating trade tensions between the two nations. President Donald Trump has consistently condemned the influx of illegal drugs into the United States, which he claims are being trafficked from Canada and Mexico.

Trump Announces Tariffs on Canada Starting March 4
President Donald Trump intends to implement tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico beginning Tuesday, alongside a decision to increase the existing 10% tariff on products from China to 20%. In a post on Truth Social this past Thursday, Trump highlighted the alarming influx of illicit drugs, including fentanyl, into the United States and claimed that these import taxes would incentivize other nations to take stronger action against trafficking.

Trump’s post on Truth Social read, “We cannot allow this scourge to continue to harm the USA, and therefore, until it stops, or is seriously limited, the proposed TARIFFS scheduled to go into effect on MARCH FOURTH will, indeed, go into effect, as scheduled,” the Republican president wrote. “China will likewise be charged an additional 10% Tariff on that date.”
Trump plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from both Mexico and Canada, while reducing the levy to 10% on Canadian energy products, including oil and electricity. This action, which is publicly linked to concerns over drug trafficking and immigration, prompted Mexico and Canada to highlight their ongoing initiatives to tackle these problems. Canada appointed a fentanyl czar, and Mexico deployed 10,000 National Guard troops to its border with the United States.

‘If US Goes Ahead and Imposes Tariffs…’: PM Justin Trudeau
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada has allocated over 1 billion Canadian dollars to enhance border security. He also mentioned that ministers and officials from his government are currently in Washington this week.
Trudeau, in a statement in Montreal said, “There is no emergency for the United States at the border with Canada when it comes to fentanyl, and that is exactly what we are demonstrating at this time. If the United States goes ahead and imposes tariffs, we already shared the details of our plan. We have $30 billion worth of U.S. products that will be subject to tariffs. And $125 billion of tariffs that will be applied three weeks later. But we don’t want to be in that position.”
The announcement of the imposition of tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China was one of the first executive orders signed by Trump after he assumed duties of the US President. This move by the US President is a part of his ‘America First’ policy, which is the basis of most of his decisions as the head of the country.
