The declaration, made in Dalai Lama’s new book ‘Voice for the Voiceless’ released on March 11, has intensified ongoing tensions with Beijing, which claims the authority to appoint his successor. In his book, the Dalai Lama’s vision for his successor is clear that the new Dalai Lama will be born in the “free world,” ensuring the continuation of the traditional mission of the Dalai Lama.

Meanwhile, the Dalai Lama’s declaration has sparked a mix of emotions within the Tibetan community. Some have expressed concerns about the implications of this decision, while others have welcomed the move as a necessary step to ensure the survival of Tibetan Buddhism.

The Tibetan government-in-exile, based in India’s Dharamshala, has been quick to support the Dalai Lama’s decision. The government has asserted the importance of maintaining the traditional practices of Tibetan Buddhism, including the selection of the Dalai Lama’s successor.

The 89-year-old Dalai Lama’s statement, made in his new book “Voice for the Voiceless,” intensifies tensions with Beijing, which insists on selecting the next Dalai Lama.

China has rejected the Dalai Lama’s authority, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning labeling him a “political exile” engaged in “anti-China separatist activities.” Beijing claims the reincarnation must follow Chinese laws and historical traditions.

The Tibetan leader’s announcement ensures the battle over Tibet’s future will continue, with Beijing insisting it will select the next Dalai Lama.

Meanwhile, the Dalai Lama’s decision is seen as a strategic move to protect Tibetan Buddhism and its traditions. His book reflects on decades of efforts to “save my homeland and people” and reiterates his call for dialogue.
