1. A Preposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun. It shows what relationship that noun or pronoun has with some other word or phrase. 
1. The book is on the table.
2. The eggs are in the basket.
3. She went with me.
4. He fell into the river.
2. The most commonly used Prepositions in English are :
at till upon among
in into down behind
to with along against
by near about next to
of over under with out
on until round towards
off after out of through
for from during between
out since before in front of
3. We are giving here some general rules about the use of some Prepositions. However, the proper use of prepositions can be learnt by practice only.
4. The two most common types of Preposition are— 
(i) Prepositions of Time :
after his death; at six o’clock; by next month; during the holidays; for many years; from 6th April; in the afternoon; late into the night; on Monday; since yesterday; slept through the night; waited till morning; ten minutes to twelve; until his death; rise with the sun; within a month.
(ii) Prepositions of Place :
looked about the room; ran across the road; sat among the girls; stayed at home; stood before the door; hid behind the curtain; trains between Delhi and Ambala; came from Agra; clouds in the sky; fell into the well; the park near our house; the book on the table; went round the market; passed through the forest; came to our house; ran towards me; stood under the tree; climbed up the hill; jumped upon the table.
5. The following Prepositions need special notice.
• In is used with names of countries and large towns;
at is used with small localities, towns and villages.
They live in Delhi.
He lives in America.
He lives at Model Town in Ludhiana.
• In is used for things at rest; into is used for things in motion. on meccan
She was in bed.
He jumped into the river.
• On is used for things at rest;
upon is used for things in motion.
I was sitting on my chair.
A cat sprang upon the table.
• Till is used for time; to is used for place.
He slept till eight o’clock.
He climbed to the top of the hill.
• With is used for an instrument;
by is used for an agent.
The thief was beaten with a stick. The thief was caught by the policeman.
• For is used for period of time;
since is used for point of time.
I haven’t seen him for two days.
I haven’t seen him since Monday.
• Between is used for two persons or things;
among is used for more than two.
There was a fight between the two brothers.
The villagers were fighting among themselves.

8. Particular words are followed by particular prepositions. Such prepositional uses have to be committed to memory. Some of these uses are given below : 
1. Abide — We must abide by the rule of the road.
2. Absorb in — I was absorbed in my work.
3. Abstain from — We should abstain from drinking.
4. Accede to — He acceded to my request.
5. Accuse — he was accused of murder.
6. Acquit of — He was acquitted of all the charges.
7. Act upon — He acted upon my advice.
8. Addicted to — He is addicted to gambling.
9. Admit to — He was admitted to the 9th class.
10. Afraid of — I am not afraid of death.
11. Agree on — We all agree on this point.
12. Agree to — Do you agree to this proposal ?
13. Agree with — I agree with you.
14. Alarm at — We are alarmed at the sight of a lion.
15. Angry with — He is angry with me.
16. Angry at — The teacher was angry at your misconduct.
17. Apologize to, for — He apologized to me for his rude behaviour.
18. Appeal to, for — He appealed to the judge for mercy.
19. Apply to, for — He applied to the headmaster for leave.
20. Approve of — I do not approve of your action.
21. Aptitude for — She has no aptitude for music.
22. Arrive at — He arrived at Jalandhar at 6 o’clock.
23. Ashamed of — He feels ashamed of his conduct.
24. Assure of —  I assure you of my help.
25. Associate with — You should not associate with bad boys.
26. Astonished at — I was astonished at his failure.
27. Attend on — You should attend on your ailing mother.
28. Attend to — Attend to your lesson.
29. Avail of — Avail yourself of this opportunity.
30. Aware of — I am aware of my shortcomings.
31. Believe in — I do not believe in ghosts.
32. Belong to — He belongs to a rich family.
33. Bent on — He is bent on mischief.
34. Beware of — Beware of thieves.
35. Bless with — She was blessed with a son.
36. Blind in — The beggar was blind in one eye.
37. Blind to — You are blind to your shortcomings.
38. Boast of — Do not boast of your riches.
39. Born in — He was born in a poor family.
40. Born of — She was born of rich parents.
41. Born to — A son was born to her.
42. Bound for — The train is bound for Kolkata.
43. Borrow from — I borrowed a book from my friend.
44. Busy with — I was busy with my work.
45. Call at — I called at his house this morning.
46. Call on — Tomorrow, I shall call on you.
47. Care for — He does not care for his studies.
48. Care off — You should take care of your health.
49. Charge with — He was charged with murder.
50. Cling to — The baby clings to its mother.
51. Collide with — My cycle collided with a tonga.
52. Compare to — We may compare the world to a stage.
53. Compare with — Compare Ashoka with Chandragupta.
54. Complain of — She complains of headache.
55. Complain against, to — I complained against him to the officer.
56. Condemn to — The murderer was condemned to death.
57. Confidence in — I have no confidence in you.
58.Confident of — He is confident of his success.
59. Congratulate on — I congratulate you on your success.
60. Conscious of — I am conscious of my shortcomings.
61. Consist of — The class consists of forty boys.
62. Contented with —  Be contented with your lot.
63. Cure of — The doctor cured him of his disease.
64. Deal in — His father deals in cotton.
65. Deal with — I know how to deal with you.
66. Depend on —  You can always depend on me.
67. Deprive of — He was deprived of his share.
68. Desire for — I have no desire for name or fame.
69. Die of —  He died of cholera.
70. Differ from — This pen differs from that.
71. Differ with — I differ with you on this point.
72. Different from — This book is different from that.
73. Disgusted with, at — I was disgusted with him at his behaviour.
74. Dismiss from — He was dismissed from service.

89. Feel for — We should feel for the poor.
90. Fond of — Children are fond of sweets.
91. Free from — Nobody is free from worries.
92. Full of — The glass is full of milk.
93. Glad at — We are glad at your arrival.
94. Good at — He is good at mathematics.
95. Grateful to — I shall be grateful to you for this kindness.
96. Grieve at — He was grieved at his failure.
97. Guard against — You should guard yourself against your enemies.

139. Polite to — Be polite to all.
140. Popular with — This teacher is popular with the students.
141. Preferable to — Death is preferable to dishonour.
142. Prefer to — I prefer death to dishonour.
143. Pray to — I pray to God daily.
144. Prepare for — Mohan is preparing for the examination.
145. Preside over — Who presided over the meeting ?
146. Prevent from — He prevented me from going there.
147. Prey to — He fell a prey to bad company.
148. Pride in — She takes pride in her beauty.
149. Proud of on — She is proud of her beauty.
150. Quarrel with — Do not quarrel with other over trifles.
