SUMMARY OF THE STORY
Once there was a coffee planter in India. He engaged elephants to clear stumps for coffee planting. (Stump is that part of the tree which is left in the ground after the rest of the tree has fallen or has been cut down.) One of the elephants, called Moti Guj, had a fine pair of tusks. So he was engaged to uproot the stumps. His master was one Deesa who was a foolish drunkard. The animal was the best while his master was the worst. But the two were devotedly attached to each other. Deesa would sit on the elephant’s neck and give him commands. The elephant obeyed his master like a slave. Deesa would often beat the animal when he was drunk. But the animal bore it all for the sake of Deesa’s love. Deesa truly loved his elephant. He would sing him songs, embrace him, call him the king of elephants, and would wash him in the river once a week.
Deesa was fond of drinking. He often told lies to get leave to go and drink hard. He had a short memory. He often forgot that he had told a particular lie before. Once he told his master that his mother was dead. The master reminded him of his earlier statement about his mother’s death. But then Deesa spoke the truth that he wanted to go and get properly drunk. He was given leave for ten days. But the leave ve was g given on the condition that the work should not suffer. Deesa agreed to it and made alternative arrangements. He told Moti Guj in his own tender way that he was going on leave for ten days and that he was to work under another mahout named Chihun.
Chihun was very kind to the elephant, but Moti Guj felt unhappy and lonely without Deesa. Anyhow, he worked well for ten days. But on the eleventh day, he became a mutineer. No threats could make the animal bend. He roamed about the garden, harassed Chihun, chased the planter and made fun of other elephants.  He spoiled the garden and returned to Chihun for food in the evening. Chihun snubbed the elephant and refused to give him any food. However, Moti Guj could not be humiliated like this. He lifted Chihun’s child up with his trunk. Chihun immediately submitted, served the elephant food and drink and got his dear child released.
At last, Deesa returned. He feared his master would scold him for outstaying his leave. He reported for work with many lies, but the master had only this to say, “Call up your beast.” Deesa called in the elephant’s language. Moti Guj came running and fell into Deesa’s arms trumpeting with joy. Deesa addressed him as his son and his love. Moti Guj lifted Deesa up on his trunk and left for the job of stump-clearing. The planter was too astonished to be angry.

Writing Work
Q. 1. Write an account of love between Deesa and Moti Guj.
Ans.— Deesa, indeed, loved his elephant like a son. And on his part, Moti Guj also behaved like an obedient son. Both of them were deeply attached to each other. It was only when Deesa got drunk that he lost his head. Then he would beat his elephant. But Moti Guj never thought of trampling Deesa. Q. 2. Write a short essay on the Preservation of Wildlife.
Ans.— Since time immemorial, man has been hunting wild animals for food. Then he started hunting them for sport. And then he killed them to sell their hides and make money. And now he kills them for all these purposes. As a result, many wild species have almost become extinct. Many countries have passed strict laws against hunting wild animals.
Wildlife reserves and sanctuaries have been created for the protection of endangered species. But the evil of poaching still continues. For example, in India the tiger has almost become extinct. Massive poaching in the past two years has wiped out the entire tiger population at one of the tiger reserves in India. According to the latest official figures, we have now only 1500 tigers bilet dichter dola left in the wild.
The tiger is the pride of our forests. It is one of the most beautiful of wild animals. Poachers kill it for the sake of its lovely hide, which they can sell at a very high price in other countries. These unscrupulous people forget the harm they are doing to mother earth. They are killing one of God’s loveliest creatures just for the sake of money. The government should come down heavily on such people.
Often it has been reported that the officials in the tiger reserves are mixed up with the poachers. It is shameful that the protectors have become destroyers. These men deserve no less a punishment than hanging. It is the duty of the government to save the wildlife in whatever way it can.
