New Delhi: A decade after the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, the maritime exploration firm Ocean Infinity has restarted its search efforts, Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed on Tuesday.
Flight MH370, a Boeing 777 carrying 239 people, vanished on March 8, 2014, while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
Many families who lost people in the disappearance remain steadfast in their quest for answers. They argue the mystery must be resolved, not just for personal closure but also to prevent future disasters.

Loke stated that discussions between the Malaysian government and Ocean Infinity regarding contract terms were still ongoing, but he welcomed the company’s proactive approach in resuming the search.

Search Duration Yet to Be Determined
While Loke did not specify when exactly Ocean Infinity had restarted its search, he acknowledged that the duration of the new operation had yet to be negotiated.

The Malaysian government had previously agreed in principle, in December 2024, to resume efforts to locate the wreckage. Despite the most extensive search in aviation history, the plane remains missing.

“They [Ocean Infinity] have convinced us that they are ready. That’s why the Malaysian government is proceeding with this,” Loke stated.
Under the proposed deal, Ocean Infinity would receive a $70 million payment if it successfully locates substantial wreckage of the missing aircraft.
Previous Searches and Lingering Questions
In 2018, Malaysia also partnered with Ocean Infinity in a search operation in the southern Indian Ocean, offering a similar payment incentive. However, the firm’s attempts were unsuccessful.

Over the years, debris, some confirmed and others suspected to be from MH370 has washed up along the African coastline and Indian Ocean islands. The Malaysian government has retained custody of these pieces.
A previous search, conducted by Malaysia, Australia, and China, covered 120,000 square kilometers (46,332 square miles) of the Indian Ocean, guided by satellite data from Inmarsat.

With more than 150 Chinese passengers on board, the tragedy prompted families to seek compensation from Malaysia Airlines, Boeing, Rolls-Royce (the aircraft’s engine manufacturer), and Allianz (the insurance provider).

Despite the passage of time, the mystery of MH370 continues to haunt aviation experts and the families of those who were on board.
