Q. Priya’s mother uses iodised salt at home. One day while cooking, Priya asked her mother about iodised salt. She said people who not use iodised salt suffer from deficiency of iodine which leads to goitre and hypothyroidism.
(a) What are physical symptoms of goiter and hypothyroidism?
(b) How will you inform others about the importance of iodised salt?
(c) Is iodine metal or non-metal?
(d) Find physical properties of iodine
(e) What is difference between iodised salt and normal salt ?
Ans. (a) The physical symptoms of goitre and hypothyroidism are as follow :
(i) During hypothyroidism the metabolic rate increases in the body.
(ii) Increased sleep is observed with increased body weight.
(iii) Swelling of legs is also observed.
(iv) During goitre, the thyroid gland enlarges and also eyes may protrude outwards.
(b) Others can be informed about importance of iodised salts by posters and banners or by small awareness programmes launched by children in their locality.
(c) Iodine is a non-metal with symbol I.
(d) Iodine is a non-metal which is metallic grey in colour as solid and violet in colour when gas. It has boiling point of about 457.4 K and density of about 4.933 g/cm³. Iodine sublimes on heating.
(e) Overall there is not much difference in these two types of salts. The main difference is that normal salts are NaCl crystals but iodised salt contains added iodine to NaCl which is a micronutrient for us. This is because iodine level is less in many soils all over world so it does not reach vegetables which leads to Goitre.
