Sweetest Love (John Donne)

Sweetest Love (John Donne)

“Sweetest Love, I Do not Go” comes from the pen of John Donne. Donne is one of the leading poets of the seventeenth century. He is the leader of the metaphysical school of poetry. He has composed both amorous and religious poems. This present poem is one of his representative amorous poems. Almost all his poems are remarkable for their metaphysical wit and conceit. Besides, they are also remarkable for their sincerity of feelings and forcefulness of expression.
“Sweetest Love, I Do not Go” is a love poem which can be interpreted in various ways. The poet has to go for a while from his beloved on a certain journey. He therefore seeks her permission to leave her alone. He contends that he is bound to return back to her and that too very soon. He attempts to prove his contention with various examples. He wants to assure her that neither he is tired of her nor he hopes to find a better love than her in any part of the world. To live in separation from her will be for him just like death. He desires to experience death in life itself by leaving away from her for a while. The poet requests her not to be sad or worried at all on account of his absence. Her tears are his life blood and therefore he forbids her to shed a single drop of tears in his absence. In fact they are one soul with two bodies and as such they can never be separated.
This poem is remarkable for giving forceful expression to the feelings of an intense and deep love. There are some hyperbolic comparisions, such as that of the sun with the lover, in the poem as well but they fit suitably in the context of the poem.
