Trudeau in Tears as He Counts Final Days in Office Amid Trump’s Tariff Threats | VIDEO- wna24

Canada is set to witness a major political shift this weekend, with the ruling Liberal Party gearing up to elect a new leader. The transition marks the end of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s nearly decade-long tenure, as he steps down following declining popularity and mounting challenges.  

At a press conference on Thursday, Trudeau became visibly emotional while reflecting on his time in office. “Every single day in this office, I have put Canadians first. We got you. Even in these last days, we will not let Canadians down,” he said, his voice breaking.  

The Liberal Party is set to announce its new leader on Sunday, March 9. Once the decision is made, Trudeau will officially hand over the reins, marking the end of his leadership both as Prime Minister and as the party’s face.  

Trudeau had announced his resignation in January, following a dip in approval ratings. His tenure, once marked by overwhelming public support, had come under strain due to economic challenges, policy decisions, and growing dissatisfaction among voters.  

During his farewell speech, Trudeau also addressed the ongoing trade tensions with the US. Taking a dig at former US President Donald Trump, he criticized Washington’s abrupt decision to pause sweeping tariffs on Canadian goods for another month. Calling the move “Thursday,” his response drew laughter from the audience.  

Trudeau made it clear that Canada would stand firm, even as trade disputes intensified. “Our goal is to get all tariffs removed,” he said, warning that a trade war between the two nations could continue for the foreseeable future.  

He also mentioned his recent conversation with Trump, calling it “colourful but constructive.” Trudeau argued that strong economic ties between Canada, the US, and Mexico were essential.

“America First happens best when Canadians and Mexicans are prospering as well. A win-lose between us would actually be worse for them than a win-win,” he remarked, taking another swipe at Trump’s aggressive trade policies.

Reflecting on his tenure, Trudeau pointed to global crises, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Middle East conflict, as defining moments of his leadership. He also referenced Trump’s presidency, saying, “I’ve had ten years of Donald Trump,” in an apparent nod to the challenges posed by US-Canada relations.  

Despite the setbacks, Trudeau described serving Canadians as the greatest honour of his life. With his departure imminent, all eyes are now on the Liberal Party’s leadership contest and the future direction of Canadian politics.
