WHAT IS STORY WRITING?

Any kind of writing skill much depends on the student’s sense of structure. Primarily to present something in correct English, grammatical structure of sentence should be known perfectly. Simple sentence serves the purpose better. Then writing on something further depends on structure of thinking. So, something is to be presented in a systematic way. In story writing, in addition to all these, imaginative faculty comes in much use.

HOW TO WRITE A STORY

In a story there should be
  1. a title appropriate to the presentation
  2. proper use of the hints given one by one
  3. some addition of your own imagination
  4. a presentation attractive in nature
  5. a moral, in most of the cases

WORKED-OUT EXAMPLES

1. A WOODCUTTER AND HIS HONESTY
A poor but happy woodcutter lived beside a forest. One day he was cutting wood in the forest. Unfortunately the axe slipped and fell into a river. By no means he could recover it. So, he cried bitterly. Then the God of the river came up with a gold axe and a silver axe and asked him which was his. The woodcutter humbly refused to accept any. Then the God showed him his own iron axe. The woodcutter with jubilation said that it was his own axe. The River God was extremely pleased with his honesty and gave him all three. The woodcutter’s poverty ended forever.
Moral: Honesty is the best policy.
2. LORD BUDDHA AND THE BEREAVED MOTHER
Once upon a time there lived a widow with her only son. She was very poor. One day that very son died. She was deeply shocked. Mad in grief she ran with her dead son to Lord Buddha and prayed him earnestly to give back life to her only son. Lord Buddha with a gentle smile on his face asked the woman to bring some mustard seed from such a house where no one had ever died. The woman went from door to door searching for such a handful of mustard seeds, but in vain. After a long and tiring search, she came back to Buddha. Buddha did not give her any answer. She found the answer on her own. She realized death is inevitable.
Moral: Reality is greater than emotion.
3. A CLEVER CROW
One day a crow felt very thirsty. It did not find any water nearby. It was really a hot day. Flying here and there finally it found a pitcher. Coming close to it, the crow saw some water inside but it was at the bottom of the pitcher. The crow became disheartened. But after thinking a lot an idea flashed into its mind. It started to collect pebbles. It then dropped them into the pitcher one by one. After some time the crow found that the water level had risen enough to drink. from it. The crow drank and its thirst was quenched. The crow become really satisfied and flew away.
Moral: Where there’s a will there’s a way.
4. THE PIPER OF HAMELIN
Hamelin was a town of Germany. The very town was infested with rats. The king declared a handsome reward for driving away the rats of the town. Everyone thought but found no way. Then a piper came forward. When he started to play the pipe all the rats followed him unto the sea and perished. Coming back to the town he humbly demanded the promised reward, but the king denied it. So, he started to play a different tune in his pipe. All the children of the town then started to follow him. He went out of the town with the children never to come back. The whole town including the king lamented a lot, but in vain. They learnt not to cheat anyone.
Moral: If you cheat others, be ready to be cheated.
5. THE OLD MAN AND HIS LOST DAUGHTER
In olden days, in rural areas the only means of communication was the post office. An old man used to visit the post office everyday and ask the postmaster whether his daughter had returned. The postmaster told him time and again that through post office only the letters were delivered. So the search for the girl in the post office was useless. Still the old man would come everyday. The officials including the postmaster made fun of him. It made the old man very sad. The postmaster also was away from his home. He regularly received letter from his little daughter. But that daughter became silent for a week. The postmaster became really anxious about his daughter’s condition. Then he came to realize the pangs of a father whose child was away.
Moral: Feeling sympathy towards others is humanity.
6. MOTHER CROW AND THE SNAKE
Once upon a time there lived a mother crow in a tree. A snake also lived in a hole of the same tree. The crow tried to make friendship but the snake was unwilling. After a few days, in the absence of the mother crow, the snake ate up all the young crows in her nest. Finding it, the crow became furious. She planned and stole a necklace of the princess. King’s men started to follow the crow. With the necklace the crow flew to the snake’s hole. In front of the royal men’s eyes she dropped the necklace inside the hole and flew away. King’s men, to recover the necklace, had to kill the snake. Thus the mother crow took the revenge.
Moral: Tit for tat.
7. THE LITTLE BOY WITH HIS SOFT HEART.
Once ce upon a time there lived a little boy. He was happy and was loved by the elders.. On one of his birthdays, he received lots of gifts. Only his uncle gave him some money to buy something of his own choice: He decided to buy some new toys. So he was going to market with his mother. On the way he saw a beggar. The beggar was pale and hungry. The little boy felt real sorrow for him. Then he asked his mother to give him. permission so that he could give his money to the beggar. His mother agreed and he gave the money. He felt a new joy which was until then unknown to him.
Moral: Helping others begets greatest joy.
8. THE SAILOR AND HIS WIT
The endless seas always attract adventurous people to voyage. Sometimes it becomes very dangerous. Once upon a time, in such a voyage a sailor lost his way in storm. He had to struggle a lot in the midst of that turbulent sea. At daybreak he was thrown on an unknown island. He found none there. The sailor was hungry and thirsty. While searching food, he found a coconut tree full of fruit. He could not climb it. He found some monkeys on the tree. He started throwing stones at them. Monkeys normally imitate. They also started to throw coconuts at him. Thus the sailor’s purpose was served. He got both the food and the drink and was saved then.
Moral : Only brave and intelligent are fit to live better..
9. TWO FRIENDS AND A BEAR
Very few can understand the true meaning of friendship. It should be tested. One day two so called friends were travelling through a forest. All on a sudden they met a bear. Both of them were really frightened. One climbed up a tree but the other did not know how to climb. He lay down on the ground as if he was dead. The bear came close, sniffed and went away thinking him a dead man. Normally the bear does not touch anything dead. He was saved that time. After the bear’s departure, the first friend came down from the tree and asked what the bear had told him. With a little smile the second one answered-“Beware of friends who run away in danger.”
Moral: A friend in need is a friend indeed.
10. AN ANT AND A DOVE
On this earth we should always try to help others to be helped by others. One day an ant fell in a stream and was about to be drowned. A dove saw the ant’s helpless condition. She dropped a leaf in front of the ant. The ant climbed on it and was saved. Next day, the ant noticed the dove sitting carelessly on the branch and an archer was ready to kill the bird with his arrow. Quickly the ant climbed the archer’s leg. As he was about to release his arrow, it gave him a good bite. The archer became startled and missed the target. The dove flew away never knowing who actually saved her life.
Moral: Help others to be helped.
11. THE KING AND THE ASTROLOGER
Everyone on this earth loves himself/herself the most. Life is too precious for everyone. Once there was a king. He was discussing different matters with his courtiers. All of a sudden an astrologer told the king he might lose his kingdom. The king was very offended. Then and there the king pronounced his death sentence. The astrologer was really stunned. Before he was taken away by the executioners, the king asked him how long he would live. The astrologer wittily replied that he would die a week before the king’s death. Hearing this, the king remained silent for a moment and then ordered the guards to leave the astrologer. He was let off.
Moral: Everyone loves oneself the best.
12. THE RICH MERCHANT AND HIS FATE
One day a rich merchant was coming back home from a fair on horseback with a large sum of money. All of a sudden it started to rain heavily. He found no shelter in the forest. Because of heavy shower he as well as his money got wet. He cursed his own fate for such a situation. Suddenly a robber came out of the dense forest. The merchant tried to resist the robber. The robber then tried to shoot him dead. He failed as the gun-powder dampened in rain. In the meantime the merchant rode away. Ultimately he reached home safely. For the first time in his life he realized that God is always kind to everyone.
Moral: God is always good.
13. THE IMMORTAL BOND OF BROTHER AND SISTER
Once upon a time there lived a brother and his sister together. They loved each other very much. The boy grew a bad habit of stealing. One day he stole a watch from his neighbour’s house and offered it to his sister: Knowing all these she reproved him. She advised him to return the watch. The boy was afraid to do that. Then she herself undertook the responsibility. But while keeping the watch in place, the neighbour detected her as a thief. The girl had to stand the trial. Her brother then confessed his guilt in front of the judge. The judge forgave the brother for his honesty and praised the sister for her selfless love and sacrifice.
Moral: Love conquers all.
14. COLUMBUS : A GREAT MAN OF RARE WISDOM
Columbus was a world famous sea explorer. Putting his life at risk he undertook the sea journey towards the unknown world and discovered America. A dinner party was arranged in honour of his great discovery. There a lord remarked that anybody could have discovered America, it was nothing great. Columbus heard it and placed a boiled egg in front of them. He asked the guests to make the egg stand on one end. Everybody tried in vain. Then Columbus cut an end and the egg stood. It looked very simple then. Then he told the lord that it is always easy to be a follower but difficult to be a pioneer. The lord was really ashamed and asked for Columbus’ forgiveness.
Moral : Brave and wise always leads.
15. THE WOLF AND THE HELPLESS CRANE
The wolf is known to be cunning, so everybody tries to avoid him in the forest. One day a wolf in a jungle fell in a great danger. A bone stuck in the throat. It was such that he neither could stay still nor could take it out himself. Then he requested each animal one by one but none helped him out of fear. He promised a reward to him who would help him. Even then no one came forward. At last a greedy crane drew the bone out of his throat and the wolf was relieved. The crane demanded the promised reward. The wicked wolf frightened him away. The crane left the place blaming himself for his own greed and foolishness.
Moral: Foolishness is a sin.
16. TRUE MOTHERHOOD
The bondage of a mother with her child is heavenly. Mother never wishes to be separated from her child. But one day people saw two women quarrelling over a child. Each of them was claiming the child as her own. Finding no way, the people brought the women to the judge. Hearing their claim, the judge himself became puzzled. He became quiet and thought deeply. Then he ordered to cut the baby into two equal halves and give the women equally. Hearing this one woman wailed loudly and begged the judge not to do this. Then judge ordered to hand over the baby to that woman as she was the real mother. A true mother cannot let her child die.
Moral: Truth can never be suppressed.
17. TIT FOR TAT
Dishonest people are always cunning. They cheat people by some way or other. Once, such a dishonest shopkeeper used to cheat the customer in measurement. In the beginning, the customer found nothing wrong. But when it came to his notice, he protested strongly. Finding himself in awkward position the shopkeeper admitted the truth and laughingly replied, “I thought to relieve you somehow You have to carry less load.” Hearing this, the customer started to pay him less money. The shopkeeper became furious. Then the customer said to him, “Now, you will have to count less.” The shopkeeper realized he was caught in his own trap. Since then he never cheated anyone.
Moral: Tricks bring us no good.
18. THE SOLDIER AND CAGED BIRDS
Long time ago, war broke out between England and France. France defeated England after a hard battle. An English soldier was caught and imprisoned in France. Days passed. England and France signed a peace treaty. So the soldier in prison also was released. He was returning home. On the way he found a bird-seller with many kinds of birds in cages with him. The caged birds gave him the reminder of his imprisoned days. He became shocked and bought all the birds from the seller. He then set them free in the sky. Now beautiful smile hovered in the face of the soldier..
Moral: Only a sufferer knows the pangs of sufferings.
19. KIND HEARTED SIR PHILIP SIDNEY
Sir Philip Sidney was a great sonnet writer. He was world famous for his soft heart. Once he joined the battle and became wounded. The other soldiers rescued him from the battlefield and then and there carried him to the camp. Lying on the bed, he felt very thirsty and asked for some water. A nurse brought for him a glass of water. He was about to drink it when he saw a wounded soldier looking wistfully at the glass. Sidney stopped and asked the nurse to give the water to the soldier saying, “Thy necessity is greater than mine.” The soldier felt grateful to Sidney for his kindness. He also understood the meaning of self-sacrifice.
Moral: The greatest ornament of human life is sympathy.
