The text is an extract from Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’. The story is about the childhood pranks of a young boy who is looking for ways to avoid going to school but caught in his own trap.
Mark Twain is the literary self of clemens, who, was born on November 30, 1835, in the frontier village of Florida, Missouri, in America. He spent his boyhood in nearby Hannibal, on the banks of the Mississippi River, observing its busy life, fascinated by its romance, but chilled by the violence and bloodshed it bred. Clemens was eleven years old when his lawyer father died. In order to help the family earn money, the young Clemens began working as a store clerk and a delivery boy. Then he also began working as an apprentice to a compositor with local printers, contributing occasional small pieces to local newspapers. After that gradually his writing career flourished. In 1907 Oxford University awarded him honorary D. Lit. He died in 1910.

SUMMARY AND CRITICAL PERSPECTIVE OF THE STORY

This is the story of a boy and his childlike pranks. For the young boys and girls, there is a general aversion to school. School is a kind of prison house for them as there they can get much more punishment and confinement than prize and love. Here the little boy, Tom’s activity and thinking are the sources of fresh laughter.
Waking up from sleep, Tom first thinks how he will avoid going to school. Generally elders do not give any importance to such a wish. They think that the children will be spoiled unless they go to school. So Tom must have to find out some serious cause to serve his purpose. He starts to search for some physical distress or ailment. Initially he thinks about his stomach trouble. But that is not too serious a problem. So, he thinks about his loose tooth. But he has to drop this plan also, thinking that Aunt Polly may pull his tooth out. So, he starts pretending that he suffers from a sore toe. He starts to groan. Ultimately it drags his Aunt upstairs. She gives little importance to the sore toe. Then Tom tells her about the tooth: She then and there tries to pull the loose tooth out to solve this problem. By this time the case has gone beyond Tom’s grip. Even after admitting the truth he is unable to make himself free from his Aunt’s clutches. Ultimately he loses the tooth, creating a gap in his upper row of teeth. Thus this hilarious episode comes to an end.
