You have a bag of cotton and an iron bar, each indicating a mass of 100 kg when measured on a weighing machine. In reality, one is heavier than other. Can you say which one is heavier and why?
Q. You have a bag of cotton and an iron bar, each indicating a mass of 100 kg when measured on a weighing machine. In reality, one is heavier than other. Can you say which one is heavier and why?
Ans. Cotton is heavier. Since both indicate a mass of 100 kg, it means that this mass is after taking into account the loss of weight due to upthrust. Cotton occupies more volume than an equal mass of iron, therefore, it experiences a greater upthrust and hence a greater loss in weight. To compensate this loss the mass of cotton taken should be more than that of iron.
