‘My dear Mr Bennet,’ said Mrs Bennet one day, ‘have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last ?
Mr Bennet replied that he had not.
‘But it is,’ said she; for Mrs Long has just been here, and she told me all about it.’
Mr Bennet made no answer.
‘Do you want to know who has taken it ? cried his wife impatiently.
You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it.’
This was invitation enough.
‘Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England. He came on Monday to see the place, and was so much delighted with it that he agreed to take it….’
‘What is his name ?
‘Bingley.
‘Is he married or single ?
‘Oh single, my dear, to be sure ! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls !’ ‘How ?’
(Page13)
‘My dear Mr Bennet,’ replied his wife, ‘how can you be so tiresome ? You must know that I am thinking of him marrying one of them.’
‘Is that his design in settling here ?”
‘Design ! Nonsense, how can you talk so ! But it is very likely that he may fall in love with one of them, and, therefore, you must visit him as soon as he comes.
‘I see no occasion for that. You and the girls may go, or you may send them by themselves, which perhaps will be still better, for, as you are as handsome as any of them, Mr Bingley might like you the best of the party.’
‘My dear, you flatter me. I certainly have had my share of beauty; but, my dear, you must indeed go and see Mr Bingley when he comes into the neighbourhood.’
‘I daresay Mr Bingley will be very glad to see you, and I will send a few lines by you to assure him of my hearty consent to marrying whichever he chooses of the girls.’
You take delight in vexing me. You have no compassion on my poor nerves.’
You mistake me, my dear. I have a high respect for your nerves. They are my old friends.’
‘Ah ! You do not know what I suffer.’ But I hope you will get over it, and live to see many young men of four thousand a year come into the neighbourhood.”
‘It will be no use to us if twenty such den should come, since you will not visit them.’
Mr Bennet was among the earliest of those who waited on Mr Bingley. He had always intended to visit him, though to the last always assuring his wife that he should not go. Till the evening after the visit was paid she had no knowledge of it. It was then disclosed in the following manner.
Observing his second daughter employed in trimming a hat, he suddenly addressed her with :
‘I hope Mr Bingley will like it, Lizzy.’ ‘We are not ……… to know what Mr Bingley likes, ‘ said her mother, ‘since we are not to visit.’
‘But you forget, mamma,’ ‘ said Elizabeth, ‘that we shall meet him at the assemblies, and that Mrs Long has promised to introduce him.”
‘I do not believe Mrs Long will do any such thing. She has two nieces of her own. She is a selfish woman.
Mrs Bennet began scolding one of her DIENST daughters.
‘Don’t keep coughing so, Kitty, for heaven’s sake! Have a little compassion on my nerves.’
‘Kitty has no discretion in her coughs, ‘ said her father; ‘she times them ill.
‘I do not cough for my own amusement,’ said Kitty fretfully.
‘Let us return to Mr Bingley, continued Mr Bennet.
( Page 14 )
I am sick of Mr Bingley,’ cried his wife.
‘I am sorry to hear that. Why did not you tell me so before ? If I had known as much this morning, I certainly …….. But I have actually paid the visit; we cannot would not have called on him escape the acquaintance now.’
The astonishment of the ladies was just what he wished; that of Mrs Bennet surpassing the rest. ‘How good it was of you, my dear Mr Bennet !’ she said. ‘But I knew I should persuade you at last. I was sure you loved your girls too well to neglect such an acquaintance. Well, how pleased I am and it is such a good joke, too, that you should have gone this morning and never said a word about it till now.’
‘Now, Kitty, you may cough as much as you choose,’ said Mr Bennet; and as he spoke, he left the room.
‘What an excellent father you have, girls,’ said Mrs Bennet, when the door was shut.

Mr Bennet pretends that he sees no reason for this visit. He asks his wife to visit Mr Bingley herself along with the girls. But then he tells her to send the girls alone. J&K class 10th English An Excellent Father Important Questions and Answers
(Short-Essay Type)
Q. 1. Give in your own words a brief character-sketch of Mr Bennet.
Ans. Mr Bennet is a middle-aged person. He lives with his wife and three daughters near Netherfield Park. He is a very jolly person. He is full of wit and humour.
Mr Bennet takes delight in vexing his wife and daughters. He teases his wife by pretending not to be interested in Mr Bingley. He asks his wife to visit Mr Bingley herself along with the girls. Then he tells her to send the girls alone. He teases her by saying, “Mr Bingley might like you the best of the party.”
Mr Bennet does not spare even his daughters. He sees his daughter, Lizzy, trimming her hat and remarks, “I hope Mr Bingley will like it.” The girl feels vexed to the great delight of her father. Mrs Bennet feels nervous over Kitty’s coughs. Now Mr Bennet remarks, “Kitty has no discretion in her coughs. She times them ill.” Thus Mr Bennet’s witty remarks produce light-hearted mirth.
Mr Bennet is, no doubt, an excellent father. He loves his daughters and is very serious about their marriage. Though he pretends to be disinterested in Mr. Bingley, yet he is first to visit him. He keeps the ladies ignorant about his visit till the last moment. When the fact is out, everybody enjoys the joke. Now at last Mrs Bennet says, “What an excellent father you have, girls!”
Q. 2. Draw a character-sketch of Mrs Bennet.
Ans. Mrs Bennet is a middle-aged woman. She has three daughters of marriageable age. Like all mothers, she is worried about their future. She wants to get them married as soon as possible. She does not want to lose any chance of finding a suitable match for each of them. She comes to know that a rich young man, named Mr Bingley, has come to live in the neighbourhood. She also comes to know that he is yet a bachelor. She at once makes a plan to hook him for one of her daughters. She asks her husband to pay a visit to Mr Bingley and make an acquaintance with him as soon as possible. She hopes that Mr Bingley will fall in love with one of her daughters and marry her. Thus we see that Mrs Bennet is really a loving and caring mother.
We also see that Mrs Bennet is a simple-hearted woman. She can’t see through the tricky remarks of her husband. She really believes that Mr Bennet is not at all serious about meeting Mr Bingley. She feels too much irritated and stops talking to her husband. But when she comes to know that Mr Bennet had paid a visit to Mr Bingley, she exclaims, “What an excellent father you have, girls!”
Q. 3. Do you feel that mother’s love is different from father’s love? Why or why not?
Ans. Children are always dear to their parents. It is difficult to say if a father loves his child more than the mother does, or vice versa. The situation can be different in different cases. But one thing is generally quite obvious. Mothers are more vocal and ostentatious than fathers in their expressions of love. Fathers are calm and reserved. In their heart of hearts, they love the child as deeply as the mothers do, but they don’t make too much show of it. Their love speaks through their actions more than through their words. While a mother will simply cry and wail by the side of her ailing child, the poor father will keep running to the doctor day and night and spend on the child’s treatment with all the pain in his heart. He will never make any mention of all the trouble he takes for his child. On the other hand, the mother will do nothing but talk to one and all about her child’s being unwell. This is quite evident in the story ‘An Excellent Father’ also. Mrs Bennet shows a lot of anxiety about her daughters. In doing so, she betrays her irritable and jealous nature also. But Mr Bennet quietly does what he is supposed to do without making any ado about it. He proves himself to be an excellent father while Mrs Bennet just turns out to be a nagging individual.
Q. 4. Write briefly about the humorous situations in ‘An Excellent Father’.
Ans. The story is full of humour from the beginning to the end. Mrs Bennet wants her husband to visit Mr Bingley as she sees in him a fine match for one of her three daughters. Mr Benne asks his wife to visit Mr Bingley herself along with the girls. But then he tells her to send the girls alone. He says jokingly, “Mr Bingley might like you the best of the party.” In the evening, Mr Bennet sees his daughter, Lizzy, trimming her hat. He teases her saying, “I hope Mr Bingley, will like it.” Mrs Bennet is all the time in a very angry mood. In the meantime, Kitty starts coughing. Mrs Bennet feels nervous over it. Mr Bennet remarks, “Kitty has no discretion in her coughs. She times them ill.” Thus Mr Bennet keeps teasing his wife and daughters. At last he says, “Let us return to Mr Bingley.” But his wife cries out, “I am sick of Mr Bingley.” Only then does Mr Bennet tell his wife that he has already visited Mr Bingley. It is a big surprise for the ladies. Mr Bennet leaves the room saying, “Now, Kitty, you may cough as much as you choose.” Thus we see that each situation in the story is sweetly humorous.
Q. 5. How was Mr Bennet an excellent father?
Or
Do you agree with Mrs. Bennet that her daughters had an excellent father? Why or why not?
Ans. Mr Bennet has three daughters of marriageable age. One morning, Mrs Bennet informs her husband that Netherfield Park has been let out. It has been taken by a young man named Mr Bingley. He is a very rich man and is a bachelor also. Mrs Bennet thinks that the young man could be a very good match for one of her daughters.
