1. A group of words that makes sense, but not complete sense, is called a Phrase.
In the morning.
After an hour.
On the table.
With my brother.
Each of the above groups of words has some sense, but not complete sense. In order to express complete sense, some more words are required. Such a group of words having incomplete sense is called sense is called a phrase. It follows, therefore, that a phrase cannot contain a Predicate.
In the following sentences, the groups of words in italics are Phrases :
1. The sun rises in the east.
2. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.
3. There came a giant to my door.
4. It was a sunset of great beauty.
5. The tops of the mountains were covered with snow.
6. Show me how to do it.
2. A group of words that does the work of a Noun is called a Noun Phrase.
3. Examine the following sentences :
1. The boy wants something.
2. The boy wants to go home.
The word something is a Noun and it is the Object of the verb wants in the first sentence. Similarly, the group of words, to go home, is the Object of the verb wants in the second sentence. Hence this group of w of words does the work of a Noun. The group of words, to go home, is therefore a Noun Phrase.
4. Further examples of Noun Phrases—
1. Early to bed is a good maxim.
2. We enjoy playing cricket.
3. Did you enjoy reading this book ?
4. To win a prize is my ambition.
5. He hopes to win the first prize.
6. He loves to issue harsh orders.
7. I tried to get the sum right.
8. Standing outside in a cold icy wind did me no good.
