WORKED-OUT EXAMPLES
A – PERSONAL
A BOOK I HAVE RECENTLY READ
Since my early childhood, with the help of my parents, I have built up a habit of reading different types of books and magazines. It helps me a lot to improve myself in every respect. Recently I have finished reading the first part of ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ written by Jonathan Swift. The first part includes Gulliver’s expedition to the land of Lilliputs. It is a beautiful imaginary travel story. Besides, it is a satire on human nature. I am really eager to read the remaining three parts of the story. While reading, many a time I have lost myself in the land of Lilliputs. Its effect on me is amazing.
MY AIM IN LIFE
Life without any aim is just like a ship without its rudder. As we live on this earth for a very short time, aim should be fixed at the beginning. Though none can control the future, yet future plans are very much needed. I want to maintain a straight forward life becoming a teacher. Whether it will be of a school or a college, the future will tell. I have got my early inspiration from my father. He leads a mediocre life, but it is one of real honour and love. Again teaching profession provides one the scope to do something for others honestly. I think, if I can be a teacher, it will be a real satisfaction for me in every respect.
A MEMORABLE DAY IN MY LIFE
Our memory preserves different incidents, especially those which strike us in some way but ultimately teach us some lessons. In my childhood days, I used to tell lies now and then to suppress some of my misdeeds. I never faced any serious consequence due to those lies for a long time. So, I became quite accustomed of telling lies casually. But one day that very habit brought about real disaster for me. One of my lies brought tears in my father’s eyes. He had to face humiliation from our relatives because of my lies. I thought a lot, suffered a lot, and ultimately came out of that situation with a great lesson for future not to tell lies for mere fun or even casually. Probably, I shall never be able to forget that day in my life.
MY FAVOURITE HOBBY
For everyone there is always some work which gives him/ her mental satisfaction during spare time. Those are hobbies. I love gardening, so gardening is my favourite hobby. As a student I have to devote myself to reading and writing. After that I always find some time for recreation. Gardening is a mode of recreation for me. I love to take care of the plants. I water them from time to time. When plants become full of flowers, it’s a heavenly bliss that I get. Again taking care of any kind of plant is doing something for nature. Living in an age of pollution I get some mental peace as my activities are somehow helpful to bring back normalcy in eco-system.
THE SEASON I LIKE MOST
The cycle of seasons is one of the beauties of our earth. Six seasons give us six different feelings. Because of pollution the cycle is much disturbed. Yet winter is the most enjoyable season. I love it very much. Winter still covers a part of December and January and the first half of February. In this season nature is decorated with beautiful flowers like dahlia, chandramallika, marigold and many more. Oranges are available. Christmas is held. It is a great event not only for the Christians but also for the people of other religions. Then comes the Saraswati Puja, a great festival especially for the students. But the season is not so good for the poorest of the poor. They suffer a lot in winter.
MY IDEAL PERSON
An ideal man is he whom we can follow in life. He can inspire us positively to go forward. In Indian culture sense of morality is of the highest value. I have seen such a man with great moral values in my life. Though he is not a renowned man, he has shown me the path of life. He was my primary school teacher. He was a humble man living in a village. I never saw him beating or rebuking someone. If we committed some mistake he would try to identify our faults with extreme patience and love. He taught us to rectify ourselves. I will never be able to forget his contribution to my life. He is my ideal forever.
MY FAVOURITE GAME
In childhood days playing different kinds of games is helpful not only for building up bodies, but also for developing the sense of unity among children. I have played a lot of different kinds of games. But above all I love football. Football has a long history related to Indian soil. In pre-independence days Indians played quality football against the British. Again playing football demands the highest quality of physical fitness. So, robust body with skill for football can make one suitable for the game. Besides playing football, I watch the game. I watch regularly international football matches on TV. The great speed of the game with top level of skill also inspires me in other fields of life.
B – NARRATIVE/DESCRIPTIVE
A VISIT TO A MUSEUM
Travelling is a part of education. Travelling different places gives one the practical knowledge and experience. Such a beautiful place of visit, especially for students, is a museum. A museum may be called the storehouse of ancient articles. Various kinds of artefacts are also displayed in a museum. So the exhibition satisfies our curiosity of mind. It has some special educative value, mainly for the students of history, science and also of literature. In museum we can see the remains of ancient age collected by different means. As a result, there we can find with our own eyes the real representation of the old bygone ages. Thus a visit to a museum satisfies us greatly.
A VILLAGE FAIR
Village fair is gradually becoming a memory of the past. Most of the villages are adopting modern amenities more and more. Television, internet, mobile phones have snatched away the time for recreation from us. So, most of the old ways of recreations and gatherings are becoming outdated. One such beautiful place for amusement and gathering is the fair ground. In remote parts of Bengal until now fair is a subject of attraction for rural people. I went to visit such a fair at Purulia this year. In the fair lots of different items of handicrafts were displayed. I bought a few items. Again in cultural programme, ‘Chhou’ dance attracted me most. I got a pleasure which was closer to earth and absolutely with the touch of heart.
C – REFLECTIVE
NATIONAL INTEGRITY
A nation and its development depend much on integrity. Unity is strength. So, irrespective of differences in caste, creed, religion or financial status, all the people of the country should feel oneness, a sense of unity. This ensures national integrity. So for prosperity, a country must find unity in diversity. Of course, there will be some disrupting forces, trying to create chaotic situations. But their challenges must be faced coolly. This is the spirit of nationalism. People will live in harmony and all the citizens will be responsible for their duties. Then a country will achieve the greatest.
THE IMPORTANCE OF READING NEWSPAPER
Newspaper with morning tea is the ideal beginning of a day. Addiction is used in negative sense, but addiction to newspaper is a healthy exercise. Information, knowledge, skill everything is provided by a newspaper. A newspaper includes every kind of information-social, political, of games and sports, film industry, business and the like. In student life, its importance is great. It provides us with general knowledge, information about current affairs, and above all practical experiences. It also helps to improve language skills. So for everyone of different age-groups, newspaper offers mental nutrition.
OUR DUTY TO OLD PEOPLE
Life always moves forward from birth to death. So, in course of life, becoming old is a natural phenomenon. Though old age is not desired, it is inevitable for everyone. Old people are physically weak but they act as the umbrella for protection over a family. They have vast experience and knowledge about this earthly life. Their advice is invaluable for everyone. So it is our duty to protect and help them. ‘Old is gold’-this proverb is absolutely true. So we should be caring towards the old members of our society.
CHARMS OF VILLAGE LIFE
Villages are more primitive than towns and cities in respect of science and technology. So in terms of advancements villages are lagging behind. But the fact is that India proper with her love, hospitality and simplicity lives in her villages. In village life the gifts of nature are abundant. One can get pollution free pure air in villages. Flowers in full bloom, fields full of green and yellow corn, beautiful songs of birds all this can be found or heard in villages. There one can get live fish and fresh vegetables. Calmness and quietness prevails in nature far away from madding crowd. So, to get true mental peace of life, village is an ideal place to live in.
HOW A CHILD GROWS UP TO A MAN
Human child much depends on others at the time of growing up. At the beginning a child cannot eat or drink, even cannot sleep without the help of parents. Gradually different sense organs develop. Then he/she can speak and walk. At the primary stage of walking, elders must assist him/her. Then becoming partly matured the child starts to go to school. There a great role is played by the teachers. So a teacher’s position in a child’s life is next to the parents. With the help of education a child becomes gradually conscious about his/ her own identity. Thereafter he/she forms individual views about life, family and society. Now he/she becomes a responsible citizen and individual. He/She is ready to take the responsibility of others.
ADVANTAGES OF MORNING WALK
“Health is wealth.” This old proverb is ever new with its practical justification. Healthy body can only support a healthy mind. So to maintain that very health every one of us must do something. Morning walk is such a good habit. In the morning gentle walk can help one to avoid different diseases. Blood pressure will be under control, the problem of cholesterol and blood sugar may also be solved. Close contact with nature with her calm and quiet atmosphere, light breeze, the first rays of the sun, bird’s twittering have their good effects both on mind and body. With morning walk we can start for a day’s work positively. Independent exercise can give desired fitness for us. So, everybody should have a walk in the morning everyday.
THE ROLE OF A GOOD FRIEND
“A friend in need is a friend indeed.” Friendship is one of the rarest gifts of God on this earth. If someone’s life is gifted with a good friend, most of the troubles of this earth become much lighter. A good friend is really a true ornament of life. With such a friend we can share everything, both good and bad. He/She will enrich our life. He/She will share the joys as well as the sorrows of life with us. In childhood days a good friend is an all-time playmate giving company and protection as well whenever needed. At later stage of life he/ she stands by us in weal and woe. A good friend enhances our joy and lessens our sorrow.
STUDENTS AND THEIR DUTY
Student life is the seed time of one’s life. During this one can get the chance to arrange life properly for future. Students are considered to be the backbone of a society. Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders. So every country gives the maximum importance to education. A country prospers when its education system is good and proper. A student has many dutie to perform, many responsibilities to shoulder. A student should learn to obey the teachers and elders. At the same time he/she should love the juniors. Learning lessons properly is of utmost importance. He/she has to take the responsibility of the downtrodden. Then only proper development of a country comes.
BENEFITS AND HARMS OF TELEVISION
Science has made our life faster and given us many gifts. One of such gifts is, of course, the television. It provides us information of the world in all the fields. Besides, it gives us profuse entertainment. So, one can really be absorbed in television. Lots of programmes are there where students can learn many things. If these are the benefits, then harms are no less. Excessive adver-tisement makes us fatigued. Some advertisements cross the limit of decency. It snatches away vital time of work, especially from the students. Again sitting in front of television can damage our eyesight and cause headache and different physical problems. So television is an ornament of modern life but we must be selective in its use.
IMPORTANCE OF TREES
God has created two different life forms on this earthanimal kingdom and plant kingdom. Man, the king of the animal kingdom, dominates the planet. But we should not forget that without the plant kingdom, life is impossible. So from every respect we depend on nature, on trees. Trees create forest that maintains the ecosystem. But because of mad rush for creating a better civilization we are destroying trees. It causes imbalance in nature. So we are now facing the global warming that may destroy our beautiful earth. To save the planet we must plant more and more trees to give earth her lost beauty. Then only ecosystem can survive.
STUDENTS AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
In childhood days, first a child goes to school for learning different kinds of lessons. At that time society provides him/ her every kind of help to march forward. In school a student is taught not only different subjects but also some moral lessons. So in childhood days, as a student he/she learns that at later stage of life he/she also has to take much responsibility of society.. Learning properly he/she can show what is fellow-feeling, what is love and care for others, especially for the old and helpless people. So a student should learn to be truthful, dutiful, punctual and responsible. Then a society’ can prosper depending on such students.
IMPORTANCE OF TEENAGE YEARS
Teenage years are the best part of one’s life. It fills one with vitality and energy. This advantage allows the young ones to go out with the dream to win the world. They have the courage to challenge old habits and experiment newer thoughts. They can challenge even themselves. But sometimes teenagers are misguided by other people. Men with wrong motive utilize the lack of experience in the teenagers. So the boys and the girls belonging to the teenage years should find a proper mentor for them. It may be their father or mother or teacher or someone who is trustworthy. If the potential of a teenager is rightly nourished, it would give birth to a great human being.
Z00: A PLACE FOR PLEASURE OR PAIN?
The zoo is one of the most frequently visited places for the fun lovers. Parents and guardians take the little ones to the zoo so that children can see the animals as they are in reality. This has been the practice for years, and unfortunately this will continue to be the practice for years. Thus the parents give their children the enjoyment of freedom at the cost of the captivity of animals. Free expansion in nature is the natural habitat of animals. But in a zoo they are confined to a caged life. It is nothing less than a punishment for them. They have to suffer for our pleasure. If mirrors are kept in cages these might reflect the visitors. Only then they could see themselves inside the cage and feel for the animals.
FUTURE OF READING E-BOOKS
Reading books is a favourite habit of men and women of all ages. Nowadays e-books influence the society at a high degree. Many books which are either very expensive or out of print for years, are easily available in their softcopyversion. People can read e-books whenever they want to, and that too at a very low cost. People can carry them even when they are travelling. Cost effectiveness and easy availability have been making e-books more popular day by day. Some orthodox readers feel that e-books fail to deliver the real pleasure of reading books. But many think e-books are the future of reading in coming days.
TEACHER : FRIEND, PHILOSOPHER, GUIDE
The relation between a teacher and a student is based on faith, respect and love. The teacher is an authentic source of knowledge for the student. He also shows the right path of progress and the means to acquire wisdom. A teacher is the friend with whom the child can share all his emotional happenings. A teacher is the philosopher who helps the students to form a strong realization of the universal happenings. A teacher is the guide who helps the little child to pave its way overcoming psychological hurdles. Sometimes this beautiful relation suffers from miscommunication and gives birth to diverse confusion. But it is to be remembered that misunderstanding is only a passing phase in this strong relationship.

PRICE HIKE OF ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES
In today’s world leading everyday life for the mediocre and the poor is gradually becoming tougher day by day. The question of price hike is now a topic of discussion almost everywhere. Day by day the population is growing rapidly throughout the world. Naturally agricultural lands are becoming scarce. So the supply of food is decreasing. Again the hoarders sometimes are creating artificial crisis by illegal hoarding. So, the cost of articles of daily use is becoming costlier. In such a situation, Government has a role to play. They should take necessary actions against such kind of unnatural hoarding. At the same time, steps should be taken to grow more food by increasing agricultural lands and utilising technology more and more for that purpose.
SOUND POLLUTION
The word ‘Pollution’ has become a nightmarish word for all the people of the world. It has snatched away our peaceful sleep. All these are caused by us because of our ignorance and indifference towards it. During social, religious and political events we indiscriminately use microphones. Vehicles blow their horns without any consideration. Crackers are used by us in festivals. We never think how pollutions caused by those sounds can affect others badly. Especially those who are old and patients suffer a lot due to these. To stop sound pollution, effective control of loud speaker is needed. Again, we must make common people aware of the dangers of such pollutions. To put an end to this danger, strict laws must be imposed.
WATER CONSERVATION
We all know that the other name of water is life. Without water no life on this earth is possible. Our earth has a huge storehouse of water. But the truth is that only a very little part of it is usable to us. The rainwater and underground water are good to use. So we must be conscious about | using water. The growth of population along with misuse and wastage has caused acute scarcity of water. So, there is the urgent need of water conservation. Because of global warming rainfall becomes uncertain. In such a situation we should try to preserve the rain water for housework and cultivation. By making dam we can do that.
KANYASHREE PRAKALPA
The State Government of West Bengal introduced a unique scheme in 2013. It seeks to improve the status and wellbeing of girls. Child marriage and school drop-outs go hand in hand in West Bengal. To stop this and to help girls from socio-economically backward families, this scheme has started conditional cash transfer. This cash is an incentive to continue education for a longer period of time and to complete secondary or higher secondary education. It thus helps girl children have a better footing in economic and social spheres. No less than 42 lakh girls benefited from this scheme. The United Nations honoured ‘Kanyashree’ with the highest public service award. Every year 14th August is celebrated as Kanyashree Day to publicize the scheme. It is expected that the scheme will be able to eradicate the evil of child marriage and to ensure woman empowerment.
E – SOME LATEST ADDITIONS
ROLE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES IN TODAY’S LIFE
Social networking sites are web-based platforms for interaction. People use them to communicate among themselves. They can exchange information and modify the content created in the meantime. They can even delete information when necessary. As a result, social networking sites are very popular nowadays. Their role is observed in diverse fields such as business, entertainment, education, lifestyle, welfare etc. In a way, social media is a platform where every type of information and news is shared. It also serves the purpose of fighting for human rights in the society. However, all is not well with social media. It affects socialemotional communication. Ingenuity is lost when people who would ideally visit one another to convey greetings, only send text massages instead of hugs. Cyber bullying and hacking may destroy one’s peace of mind. Bes get the hundred percent advantage of social media one must have internet accessibility which is not available in every nook and corner of a country. However, with all its drawbacks and limitations, social media is here to stay and continue to become more and more important in the following years.
THE SCENES OF SUMMER DAY IN YOUR LOCALITY
It is a punishment to go out on a hot summer day. The mercury is then at its peak. Heat is unbearable even during the early hours of the day. As the mercury ascends, it becomes more difficult for all living beings to bear the scorching heat. The more the sun ascends, the more the plants begin to feel the severity of the day. Their leaves fall. They appear dull. There are not many trees in our locality. Consequently, scorching heat starts piercing to the eyes of the pedestrians. They have to wear sunglasses. They sweat profusely. It fact, most of us try to keep ourselves inside rooms, made cool with the help of air conditioner and fans. Buffaloes are found neck-deep sunk in ponds to beat heat. Unless there is rainfall as a surprise element, people seem to find no respite from the harsh punishment of summer. During this period of the year, we all harp in the same tune with Russell Baker, “Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it.”
A MOVIE YOU WATCHED
During the lockdown period, I watched ‘Pather Panchali’ again. This was the first film in Satyajit Ray’s Apu trilogy. The film uncovers beauty in the everyday life of a struggling Bengali family. This family includes Harihar, his wife, their two children, Apu and Durga, and an aging aunt, all facing poverty and a barren future. Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee, Subir Banerjee, Uma Dasgupta and Chunibala Devi played in the different roles of the movie. The innovative mind of Ravi Shankar creates a beautiful combination of sitar and flute really suited for a poor but more or less happy underprivileged rural family. The film depicts the childhood travails of the protagonist Apu and his elder sister Durga amidst the harsh village life of their poor family. And it appeals most to me.
INDIAN FUSION DESSERT
We, the Indians, are known for our sweet tooth. And more often than naught, it is dessert that we pile up high on our plates after our meals. But, just as the world of fashion sees new trends popping up each year, the culinary world also is constantly evolving. We seek to expand our taste buds. While we have witnessed the unions of pizzas and dosas, kathi rolls and frankies, chefs are now experimenting and transforming traditional desi sweetmeats into gourmet desserts by fusing them with western recipes. Desi sweets with a twist have now become very popular in the market. As a result, rosogollas’ spongy round dumplings made from cottage cheese are not merely boiled in sugar syrup. Instead, a thick kheer is poured over them and they are baked to perfection to be served as baked rosogolla. Likewise, sweet ravioli with rabri, mihidana tart etc. are prepared. The chefs and eateries are truly working overtime to think out of the box ideas and give an opportunity to food lovers to devour innovative deliciousness.
MAN’S CONTINUOUS PROGRESS IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Man has won his dominant position on this planet by his command of technology. He alone can change the shape of his world. Actually, technology is the sum total of all the different techniques by which man changes his environment. It is the application of scientific knowledge to solve human problems. Man invented a thing like a plough to till the land, or a boomerang to hunt a prey, or a wheel to speed up the mode of conveyance or a hut to save him from whimsical nature. All these were invented out of necessity. When he wanted to make those things strong and durable, civilization gradually moved on from stone to bronze to iron to the light metals of the day. Similarly, the invention of the air conditioner has made our summer cooler and winter warmer. Washing machines helps us avoid the drudgery of washing clothes. Cooker has made our process of cooking food easier. Microwave ovens heat and cook our food in no time. In a nutshell, science and technology have given a new way to live in the world.
