WORKED-OUT EXAMPLES
1. Write a letter to your friend expressing your experience of a cinema, which you have seen recently.
Address…………..
Date……………….
My dear Rakesh,
Hope you are well. For a long time we are unable to meet each other. But don’t think I have forgotten you even for a moment. At the time of enjoyment I miss you very much. Last Monday I went with my friends to see a movie in a cinema hall for the first time in my life. It was ‘Kabir Singh’ acted by Shahid Kapoor, Kiara Advani and Nikita Dutta. I had heard about the film a lot. Now I got the chance to watch it. It’s a great pleasure for three hours. Everything is praiseworthy, the acting, the plot of the story and its perfect presentation. I was charmed. More when we meet. Take care of yourself and your study.
Your friend
Rohit
2. Write a letter to your brother telling him why he should not use mobile phone thoughtlessly.

With God’s blessings, hope you are well. Your college and hostel life has just begun. I think you have adjusted yourself well with the new atmosphere. You have got a new mobile phone from our parents. That’s very good. Now you will be able to communicate with everyone easily. But be alert. Sometimes mobile phone becomes an addiction and the means of ill-use. Then it will hamper your studies. So, use it
only when you really need it. I believe, you can well understand what I mean to say.

3. Write a letter to your brother who is at present in a hostel, telling him the usefulness of early rising and morning walk.
Address…………..
Date……………….
My dear Brother,
Hope, with the blessings of God, you are well in your hostel. I know, you are carrying on your preparation for the examination with full concentration. At the same time, keep watch on your health. It is very vital. Try to rise early from bed. It maintains both the physical and mental fitness. Rising early from bed, try to walk gently for half an hour at least. The fresh wind of the morning is charming. In addition to that, in the early morning, the wind remains free from most of the polluting elements. Walking will help you to get over the problem of indigestion. also helps you to concentrate on your study much more. So, please keep in mind my words and look forward.
With love,
Your elder brother,
Anubhav
4. Write a letter to a friend telling him / her why he/she should learn English.
Address…………..
Date……………….
Dear Somnath,
In your last letter you have written that you are so proud of your mother tongue that you do not feel any urge in learning English.
I myself, however, feel that you should learn English at least for a number of practical reasons. English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Even in countries where English is not an official language, it is often used as a lingua franca. So, English may open up more opportunities for you. It will make you more desirable to employers. It gives you access to internet. Last but not the least, the world’s highest-grossing movies are made in English and so, learning English allows you to get more from popular culture.
Hence without any further delay, start learning English. No more today.
with love,
Yours ever,

To The Editor,
The Times of India,

Sub: Flare-up of violence against women in our country
Sir,
Kindly allow me some space in the esteemed column of your well-circulated daily to air my concern about the sudden outburst of violence against women in India.
In our country deities like Durga, Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati and the like are worshipped with great fervour. It is true. It is also equally true that violence against women is going up here day by day. Dowry deaths, bride burning, wife battering, molestations, acid attacks, female infanticide, etc. are rife. This kind of violence, both physical and emotional, can only be stopped if women are duly empowered. They themselves should understand all their rights and benefits. Sub: Problem of Child labour in India
Sir,
Kindly allow me some space in the esteemed column of your well-circulated daily to express my concern about the problem of child labour in India.
In the post-pandemic period, the problem of child labour has become one of the gravest maladies. It deprives children from daily school and the comfort they should get. But for many poor families, children are compelled to be labourers just because their earnings only run their families. It is harmful for his or her health-physical, mental, spiritual and moral. It thwarts his or her social development.
The Government must think seriously to put an end to this problem.

17. Newspapers have become viewspapers, one following and supporting one political line, while the others, other. Moreover, they bear more commercial ads than reports, and hence, are deviated from their true responsibilities. Write a letter of dissent to the editor of an English daily.

The Editor,
The Times of India,

Sub: Newspapers shun their true responsibility
Sir,
Newspapers is cited as the most relied-upon source. Internet may be a distant second to newspapers in terms of widespread use and value. But newspaper houses seem to be corrupt and troubled institutics in our country nowadays. Corrupt not so much in the sense that they accept bribe, but in a symbiotic sense. Newspapers fail to do what they claim to do, what they should do, and what society expects them to do. The newspaper houses, the political parties and the big business houses are entwined in a vicious circle of mutual manipulation, myth making and self-interest. As a result, biased stories are published and most of the space is left for commercial advertisements. Hope, your esteemed daily will try its best to distance itself from the symbiotic web of lies.
Thank you.

To

The Times of India,

Sub: Article published in your daily on 20 Sept. 20XX about the outbreak of Degue
From the article published in your esteemed daily on 20 Sept. 20XX, we have learnt that dengue-malaria double infection poses new challenge for doctors. At a time when the number of dengue patients is rising at a scary pace, physicians have started coming across cases of dual dengue and malaria infection.
If a person is bitten by both aldes aegypti and anopheles mosquito, then he or she can get infected by both dengue and malaria. In such a case the risk of platelet drop is higher. The obvious cause behind it is thrombocytopenia. A patient with double infection is at extra risk and demands increased monitoring. Double infection severely affects liver and increases chances of hepatitis.
People should be more alert and the civic authority must be more active to save citizens from mosquito bite. An editorial on this issue is most welcome. Thanking you,

19. Write a letter to the Editor of an English daily complaining about the misuse of a local park by dumping wastes by some locals.
To
The Editor,
The Telegraph,
6, Prafulla Sarkar Street,
Kolkata – 700001
Sub: Misuse of local park by dumping wastes Sir,
Sir,
Through the esteemed column of your well circulated daily I wish to air my grievance against the misuse of a local park in our ward no. XX.
The resident’s apathy coupled with the local administration’s indifference has turned the public park at C.I.T. Road locality here into a dumping ground. Heaps of garbage can be seen surrounding the park from all sides. A beautiful park, which elderly citizens would use, has now been inhabited by rodents and dogs that fed on garbage. In your newspaper we have learnt that the dumping yard in Domlur in Bengaluru was converted into the Ajja-Ajji Park. But here in Kolkata, what was once a serene green space for senior citizens in ward no. XX has now been turned into a black spot and dumping ground.
Unless awareness is created among residents, no cleanliness drive would change the picture. Besides, the municipal authority should have a proper waste disposal method where auto tippers collect garbage regularly. An editorial on this issue is most welcome.

Sub: Rise of Selfie-deaths in India
Sir,
Kindly allow me some space in the esteemed column of your well-circulated daily to air my concern over the emerging problem of selfie-deaths.
It is a matter of great concern that India has now become the world capital of selfie-deaths. Majority of the so-called ‘killfies’ were caused by drowning, being hit by a train or a car, or falling from a great height. Most of them, killed while taking a selfie, were below the age of 30. It is now clear that in a country still operating under a strict class hierarchy, taking and posting selfies to social media is considered a way for people to promote themselves, boost their confidence and express themselves.
This can only be stopped by vigorous public awareness campaign.
An editorial on this issue is most welcome.
Yours faithfully,
