WHAT IS A BIOGRAPHY?

A biography is a kind of paragraph on the life of some eminent personality whose life-stories may inspire us or show us bright light for future.

HOW TO WRITE A BIOGRAPHY

  1. First comes the title. It is generally according to the name whose biography is to be written. Some special quality of that personality may come with the name.
  2. Mixture of tenses may be used according to the context though most of the description is of the past. It depends much on the capacity of the student.
  3. Try to use all the hints given. If you have any extra information about the personality, you can use one or two such points. It will make your presentation better.
  4. Draw the conclusion on some great contribution of that personality.

1. Write a biography of Louis Pasteur, using the following points:

LOUIS PASTEUR

Louis Pasteur, a legendary figure in science, was born in 1822 in a village in Dole in France. His father was a poor tanner. But he was a brilliant student. He got his Doctorate degree in Chemistry. In his professional life he worked as a professor of Physics at Dijon and Professor of Chemistry at Strasbourg. He also became the Director of Scientific Studies at Ecole Normale. Later he became the Director of Pasteur Institute. He discovered different types of crystal, and the germ theory to control all kinds of diseases. He succeeded in preventing Anthrax. He also found a cure for Rabies in 1882. This is one of the greatest contributions in the world of science.

KHUDIRAM BOSE

In the history of India’s struggle for freedom from British bondage, Khudiram Bose is an unforgettable name. He was born in Midnapore in 1889. From the early childhood days, he was a spirited boy. From his school life, he had a close association with the revolutionary party. With Prafulla Chaki, he left for Mujaffarpur on a mission to kill Kingsford, a tyrannical British magistrate. But his attempt failed and Kingsford remained unhurt. Khudiram was arrested. After trial, he was sentenced to death. But his brave heart never surrendered to the British. He faced death boldly with Bande Mataram on his lips.

SIR JAGADISH CHANDRA BOSE

The great scientist of India, Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose was born on November 30, 1858, at Rarikhal in Dacca, now in Bangladesh. He got his early education in the village ‘pathsala’. Then he passed the Entrance Examination. He graduated with Honours from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Later he also got B.Sc. degree from Cambridge. Then he joined Presidency College as a professor and started his scientific research. He invented many scientific instruments like crescograph, potometer, etc. In 1917, he established Bose Institute. He also wrote the first science fiction in Bengali. The great soul passed away on November 23, 1937.

MAHASWETA DEVI

In modern Bengal, Mahasweta Devi is a well-known name for her contribution as a writer and also as a social worker. She was born in Dhaka on January 14, 1926. Her father Manish Ghatak was a great poet. Her mother Dharitri Devi was a writer and social worker. Their influence on Mahasweta was great. She got her early education from Patha Bhavan. She graduated with Honours in English from Visva Bharati. She completed MA at Calcutta University.
Then she began teaching. Her husband, Bijon Bhattacharya was a noted playwright. Mahasweta wrote profusely and worked hard for the upliftment of tribal communities. Her famous writings include Aranyer Adhikar’, ‘Rudali’, ‘Hajar Churasir Maa’, ‘Jhansir Rani’ and many more. Throughout her career she earned various honours like Sahitya Akademi Award, Jnanpith, Magsaysay, Padma Vibhushan, etc. She breathed her last on July 28, 2016.
5. Write a biography of Mother Teresa, using the following points:

MOTHER TERESA

Mother Teresa was born in Yugoslavia on 2 August, 1910. But she chose to live and die as an Indian. She got her education in the Government School in Albania. At the age of nineteen only she came to Kolkata to serve the destitute. After having training for nunnery, she joined the Loreto Convent. There she was a teacher. But she was keen to do something more for the poor and downtrodden. So, she left the convent and founded ‘Nirmal Hriday’, a philanthropic organisation. Her service to living Jesuses was acclaimed across the world. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1980. Mother left us for her heavenly abode on 5 September, 1997. India will never forget this truly sacred heart.

SATYAJIT RAY

No single word is broad and deep enough to accommodate the diverse qualities of Satyajit Ray. He was a film director, writer, musician, illustrator, graphic-designer and film-critic. He left an indelible impression on whichever field he had travelled. He was born in a prominent Bengali family on 2nd May, 1921. His grandfather Upendra Kishore Roychowdhury and his father Sukumar Roy were eminent litterateurs. His mother was Suprova Roy. In 1955 Satyajit made his debut as a director with ‘Pather Panchali’. His directorial ventures like ‘Kanchanjunga’, ‘Charulata’, ‘Satranj Ke Khiladi’, ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’, ‘Nayak’, etc. sanctioned his place in the world of cinema. He received the Oscar Award and Bharat Ratna. He was also an acclaimed fiction writer. ‘Feluda’, his detective character, is a favourite among all. Ray died on April 23, 1992 but the rays of the prodigy remain undisturbed even today.

BISMILLAH KHAN

From ancient time, India is rich in art and culture. Mother India has produced so many such legendary characters that it is a subject of wonder for others. One of such great figures, Ustad Bismillah Khan was born on 21, March, 1916 at Dhumraon in Bihar. He was the son of a family of the court musicians there. He started playing shehnai under the guidance of Ali Bux. For him, shehnai was his soul and existence. By playing the instrument, he literally made the world spellbound. Throughout his life he received numerous awards and prestigious honours. He got Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan, Padma Bibhushan, Padma Shri and many more. His shehnai stopped forever on this earth on August 21, 2006. But he will remain immortal for his musical genius.

MEGHNAD SAHA

Meghnad Saha was born at Sheoratali, Dacca, in undivided India, on October 6, 1893. As he came of a very poor family, he had to struggle a lot since his early childhood days. His father, Jagannath Saha was a poor shopkeeper. In Swadeshi movement for independence he was actively involved. So he was expelled from Dacca Collegiate School. In spite of all these, he topped the list from Dacca. Later he passed M. Sc. in Mathematics from the Presidency College, Kolkata. He worked as a professor of physics and mathematics for a long time. He got real fame with his invention of Thermal lonisation theory. He established the Nuclear Physics Institute. He was involved in multipurpose river planning of DVC to utilise the river water for various purposes from hydro-electricity production to irrigation. This great scientist breathed his last on February 16, 1956.

NETAJI SUBHAS CHANDRA BOSE

Netaji is one of the greatest patriots ever born in India. Born on 23 January, 1897 in Cuttack, in Orissa he completed his education from the Presidency College and the Scottish Church College in Kolkata. He tried ICS exam and ranked in the merit list. But as all the official jobs in India were under the British, he did not join the service. He became the Mayor of Kolkata. He was elected thrice the President of Indian National Congress. He escaped in Germany and Japan to organize India’s freedom movement. He formed the Azad Hind Fauz and declared war against the British. He was called ‘Netaji’ by the soldiers out of love and honour. His death is a mystery until now. He will be remembered forever for his bravery and honest love for the country.

PRAFULLA CHANDRA ROY

Prafulla Chandra Roy, a great scientist, was born in 1861 in Khulna, now in Bangladesh. He got his primary education in the village pathsala. Then coming to Kolkata he was admitted to the Hare School and then to the Albert School. Later he took higher education from the Metropolitan College. For further studies he went to London and got his B.Sc and D.Sc degrees from the Edinburgh University. Coming back to India, he joined the Presidency College as a professor. He was the first scientist in the world to prepare Mercurous Nitrate in laboratory. Later he established the Bengal Chemical for scientific research. He also joined the Science College as Palit Professor. This great son of India left us forever in 1944. His works shall keep him in our memory for a long, long time.

WILLIAM WORDSWORTH

William Wordsworth is one of the finest poets of English literature. He belongs to the Romantic-Age, but his poetry takes him beyond any specific era and makes him a poet of all ages. He was born in 1770 at Cocker-mouth in Cumberland. He lost his parents at an early age. He was sent to the Hawshead Grammar School at the age of eight. He got himself admitted in the St. John’s College, Cambridge in 1787 and graduated in 1791. Wordsworth’s genius was expressed at first in the Lyrical Ballads’. The ‘Solitary Reaper’, ‘Daffodils’, ‘Prelude’, ‘Tintern Abbey are some of the finest examples of his poetic creativity. This great poet of English literature died in 1850 but his poems will remain immortal forever.

Charlie Spencer Chaplin had created a new genre in the world of cinema. He is recognized as an icon of the silent film era. Charlie Chaplin was born in Walworth, London in April, 1889. The name Charlie Chaplin reflects in our mind the picture of a ‘Little Tramp’ with his funny walk. When he was only one-year-old his parents got separated and so, he had to live in abject poverty. The Kid’, ‘Modern Times’, ‘The Great Dictator’ etc. are some of his most famous films. These films display two oppo-site things at the same timelaughter and irony. Special type of sarcasm, filled with pleasure and pathos, made his films ever popular in the world.
