A car starts from rest and moves along the x-axis with constant acceleration 5 m s2 for 8 seconds. If it then continues with constant velocity, what distance will the car cover in 12 seconds since it started from the rest?

Q. A car starts from rest and moves along the x-axis with constant acceleration 5 m s-2 for 8 seconds. If it then continues with constant velocity, what distance will the car cover in 12 seconds since it started from the rest?
Ans. Given u = 0 m s-¹, a = 5 m s-², t = 8 s, S = ?
Distance covered in the first 8 s in accelerated motion is
S ut + 1/2 at² = 0 + 1/2 × 5 × (8)² = 160 m Now, velocity after 8 s is
v=u+ at = 0+5 x 8 = 40 m s-¹
Hence, distance travelled with constant velocity for next 4 second is
S=v × t = 40 × 4 = 160 m
Hence, total distance travelled is
S=S + S = 160 +160 = 320 m
