Q. (a) Define the following :
(i) Mole
(ii) Gram atomic – mass
(iii) Gram molecular mass
(b) Calculate the mass of the following:
(i) 2 moles of carbon dioxide
(ii) 6.022 x 1023 molecules of carbon dioxide.
Ans. (a) (i) Mole: One mole of any species (atoms, molecules, ions or particles) is that quantity in number (i.e., 6.022 x 1023) having a mass equal to its atomic or molecular mass in grams.
(ii) Gram atomic mass: It is the mass of an atom in grams that is equal to exactly one-twelfth (1/12th) the mass of one atom of carbon -12
(iii) Gram molecular mass: It is the sum of the atomic masses in grams of all atoms present in a molecule.
(b) (i) Mass of 2 moles of carbon dioxide (CO₂) is (2 x 44) u = 88 u.
(ii) Mass of 6.022 x 1023 molecules of CO2 is 44 u.
