Application Based Questions Solved

Q.1. What does melting point of a solid indicate ?
Ans. It indicates the strength of forces of attraction between the particles in a solid.
Q.2. Which of the following will give you more severe burns and why ?
(a) Steam at 373 K
(b) Water at 373 K
Ans.(a) Steam at 373 K, because steam has more energy with it which is equivalent to latent heat of vaporisation, i.e., the heat absorbed by water molecules at 373 K to change their state from liquid state to gaseous state. Thus, steam gives extra amount of heat causing more severe burns.
Q.3. Which gas is called dry ice? Why?
Ans.Solid CO₂ is called dry ice, because solid CO₂ gets converted directly into gaseous state without coming into liquid state when pressure is kept constant at one atmosphere.
Q.4. Which physical quantities are to be altered for liquefying gases?
Ans. (i) Pressure is increased (which will decrease interparticle space).
(ii) Temperature is reduced (which will further increase interparticle forces of attraction).
Q.5. Give reason for the following:
(i) A gas exerts pressure on the walls of the container.
(ii) A gas fills the vessel in which it is kept.
Ans. (i) Molecules of a gas are free to move randomly in all directions, so they collide with each other and with wall also.
(ii) Force of attraction between the particles of gas is very less and particles move freely in all directions.
