Q. Chlorine atom is electically neutral but chloride is a (AI-2013) charged ion. Explain.
Ans. In chlorine atom the number of electrons is equal to the number of protons that is 17 hence it is electrically neutral.
In chloride ion one electron is gained in the valence shell to attain octet state so the number of protons are 17 but the number of electrons are 18 (one excess than proton) hence it carries a charge of -1 and is thu negatively charged.
