Q. Define osmosis. Give few examples where osmosis is helpful.
Ans. The spontaneous movement of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane, i.e., plasma membrane is called osmosis. This process is a pure mechanical diffusion process by which cells absorb water without spending any amount of energy.
Few examples where osmosis is helpful :
(i) Freshwater organisms such as Amoeba and Paramecium maintain water balance in their body through this process.
(ii) The movement of water in plant cells takes place due to osmosis.
(iii) Absorption of water by the root hairs takes place due to osmosis.
(iv) It plays a major role in the opening and closing of stomata.
(v) It plays an important role in the seismonastic movements in ‘touch-me-not’ plant.
(vi) This process helps cells, tissues and soft organs (leaves, young shoots and flowers) of the plants to maintain turgidity and stretchability.
