Give reasons:

Q. Give reasons:
(a) Steam produces more severe burns than boiling water.
(b) We are able to sip hot tea faster from a saucer rather than a cup.
(c) Water kept in an earthen pot becomes cool during summer.
Ans. (a) Because particles in steam, i.e., water vapour at 373 K (100°C) have more energy than water at the same temperature. It is so because, the particles in steam have absorbed extra energy in the form of latent heat of vaporisation.
(b) Saucer has more surface area as compared to cup so due to faster rate of evaporation in saucer causes rapid cooling of hot liquid and this is the reason that hot liquid become cool more rapidly when poured in saucer as compared to a cup.
(c) Earthen pot has small pores from which water evaporates continuously. The heat required for the process of evaporation is taken from the earthen pot and from the water in it. This makes water cool in an earthen pot during summer.
