What is meant by melting point? How is it different (SAI-2010) from fusion?

Q.1. What is meant by melting point? How is it different (SAI-2010) from fusion?
Ans. The temperature at which a solid melts to become a liquid at atmospheric pressure is called its melting point. The process of melting is also called fusion.
Q.2. Why temperature of the substance does not rise during the change of state ?
Ans. During the change of state, the heat energy is used up in overcoming the force of attraction between the particles without increasing their kinetic energy. Since the kinetic energy of the particles does not increase, therefore, the temperature of the substance does not rise during the change of state.
