Which organelle is known as the powerhouse of the cell ? Why ?

Ans. Mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of the cell. These organelles contain many oxidative enzymes which oxidise the food and convert it into energy currency of the cell in the form of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate). This energy (in the form of ATP) is used by body for making new chemical compounds and for doing mechanical work. Due to this reason, mitochondria are generally referred to as ‘powerhouse of the cell’.
