Q. (a) How are living organisms dependent on soil ?
(b) Are organisms that live in water totally independent of soil as a resource?
Ans. (a) Soil is an important resource that decides the diversity of life in an area.
• The topsoil (the outermost layer of soil) is rich in minerals. It is this layer that supplies nutrients to life forms.
• It hosts a number of organisms that help in recyling of nutrients.
• It sustains the vegetation covers that in turn sustain the lives of thousands of animals life-forms.
(b) Organisms that live in water are not totally independent of soil as a resource. The `minerals and nutrients that they require to sustain their life come from soil, dissolved in the rainwater.
