Q. Define humus and state its function.
Ans. The dark coloured, partially decayed organic matter found in the top layer of soil is called humus. It makes the soil porous which helps the soil to increase its water holding capacity and the content of air. It is rich in nutrients to promote the growth of plants. The roots of plants can easily penetrate in the soil which contains humus.
